I want to build an overclocking rig, and I am deciding between a barton 2500, or some cheap p4. To overclock athlons do you have to "unlock" them? And if AMD's run warmer, does that leave less room to overclock, or can they tolerate more heat?
The bartons have no lock on the multiplier. The xp2500 has the lowest thermal output of any of the current cpus (its coolest) Its max die temperature is the highest of any proc.(you can heat it up the most without flying it) This combination makes the xp2500 the most ocable cpu since the xp1700.
As most in here may have noticed, I always suggest going with Barton 2500+ when talking about AMD and overclocking. From my experience you can get 3000+ speeds and 200MHz FSB without any effort. On the other hand I read recently a review at X-bit Labs where they overclocked a 2.4C to 3.3GHz! This is pretty damn impressive for me!
Of course the second route is more expensive, so it's your choice. If you have the money I'd say go for the 2.4C but there are many people who would prefer the 2500+ because of its price. Here is a price list for you, just to make things simplier:
I bought a 2.4C Processor, got it to 3.0 right out of box (5/4mem, 250FSB)@ 49C under load, and got an SLK-900 with a 55CFM 92MM fan on it and got it up to 3.52 completely stable with 1.6 (1.58 actual) Vcore completely stable at 47-51C under load. I used an IC7 mobo, and the regualar white thermal paste, not even As3.
