HITACHI LAPTOP REFORMAT HARDDRIVE

Hello,
My little old laptop can't keep up with the new programs so I am retiring it to a storage disk. I thought I should use the Windows XP disk to start up the format procedure but it doesn't give me that option, just wants to re-install windows.
Any ideas ?
