i have a couple of issues with my dell inspiron 8600:
1) the infrared port is unusable. was not able to detect it even after
upgrading the BIOS.

2) many of my CD-RW discs have become unusable after attempting to
write using the CD-RW/DVD+RW drive supplied by Dell.

3) the microphone input is practically usless if we need to give any
active signal. for example, i am unable to use the microphone input to
supply signal from TV tuner device which has eg:
http://www.snazzishop.com/reviews/Snazio%20PVR.pdf

4) the display (WSXGA) too seems to have problem. it turns white on
startup ...

5) the buttons provided in front of the pointer-stick are absolutely
useless because of their positioning. (the design is much better in
IBM thinkpad laptops)

wonder if someone could give some pointers to resolving the Infrared
port detection issue.. the Dell support has been able to resolve the
case.

thanks

The CD writing problem is typically resolved by a choice of appropriate
medium. Try different brands designed for the write speed of the drive.

About the IR: in device manager, on the view menu, select show hidden
devices. It might be on the list. What happens if you use the add
hardware wizard?

The white screen is from the backlight turning on before the display is
active. I do not think it is a problem. Are you using the Dell WinXP
installation?

Go into the BIOS and turn it on.

It is certainly user error. Dell is simply perfect. Could not be the fault
of the Dell machine.

I'd keep quiet if I were you Tom, you're starting to show your lack of
intelligence.

I'm sure you aren't the only Tom Scales in the world and I'm sure you don't
have a copyright against your name.

Hence, anyone can post as Tom Scales as long as he/she doesn't make
assertions that he/she *is* you, i.e "my name is Tom Scales and I live at
xxxxxx".

I'm a little concerned for his mental well-being.

Apparently he's not content with telling the world how wonderful Dell are in
this newsgroup, he's been doing it in a Compaq newsgroup as well.

In the name of God, someone help the poor man.
