I recently bought a used 2800+ barton from ebay. I was just wondering if increasing the base clock speed to 200 Mhz is possible with the proper cooling. I currently have a Thermaltake Volcano 7 heatsink and fan. My mobo is an Asus A7N8X, so I know that it can support the increase in base clock speed, but I'm not so sure about the processor. If it isn't possible to increase the base clock, how do I go about overclocking the barton? Help before I try something stupid! Thanks

P.S. Also, when I took the proc out of the box, i realized one of the pins was bent (on a corner) I bent it back into shape carefully, and it seemed to go in fine, but will there be any problems from this later on...? I only have a limited time to tell the seller it was bent to get a refund. Thanks again :)

Regarding the bent pin on the corner of your CPU- I dont think it will be a problem if there is not any noticable crease or crack on the pin it self. I highly doubt that you are going to be taking the Chip in and out of your socket. IF you do, do that then there will be a slight problem, because everytime you take it in and out of the socket that pin becomes very brittle and will eventually break off.

Regarding the overclocking: you can push that chip to the 200 FSB but do it in small increments and when you eventually get unstable just take it back a few notches. Also if possible try to have some low latency, higher speed memory, Pc3200 would be suitable for this application. Besides that, i am no guru in OC'ing(am learning though). Someone will come and help you out with your OC'ing adventure.

Do not plan on being stable past 180 Mhz FSB unless you have the A7N8X revision 2.0. The northbridge on Asus motherboards below that will probably not make it to 200.

No worries there, I have revision 2.0...I bought the mobo less than a month ago when I upgraded everything

Well first of all, your CPU heatsink's not gonna do the job. Just please take this hint: Thermaltake SUCKS, their products sure looks good but the finishing is AWFUL. If you want to go for some serious overclocking, I would recommend the Swiftec MCX462+ with 80mm Tornado fan. That would cost a lot, if you want something cheap and very effective the Thermalright AX7 is what I got with Tornado fan it's running my 2500+ OC to 3200+ at only 37C idle and 46 load(1 hour sandra burn in).

I hate Computers!

Start out nice and easy. Put the multiplier to 11 and fsb at 200. For that the fan you have is fine. Play around, use a burnin and a benchie to make sure you're stable.Have fun.
