I would say no cause I've switch out HDD's on computers before. BUT, make sure you got/change the drivers... I would say that it is probably easier to just do a clean install and start from scratch.
If you only upgrade your CPU type , you don't need to re-insatll OS . But , if you change a new MOBO , the system may ask you re-install or you can't enter it .
Usually win2000(or xp) will let you upgrade 3 components before it marks the sids as invalid. Usually a motherboard will make the computer look like a brand new system therfor showing invalid sids and requiring a fresh install. But changing only the CPU should not be a problem.
Again cpu no re-install,new mobo maybe. If you are staying with a chip co like via or sys or intel you might get away with it. Try going into device manager and killing the mobo devices, then letting them reload with the new board. Works sometimes with pro, almost never with home.
