my EBD has the number of games and current ball in play flickering on
and off during game play. is this normal? don't remember and don't
have a game to compare it to.

No, it's probably got a loose connector on the cpu board or the header
pins on the display itself are cracked and need to be resoldered.
Relatively common. (Or the connector pins themselves need replacing,
rarer.)
