Forum Windows XP : General Discussion wallpaper reset to a spyware popup ad

Sorry but this may be long. A few days ago I was online with yahoo messenger
and I tried to go to a site and realized that my homepage addy had been
changed, I figured spyware. I didn't think much about it until my wallpaper
changed to something that appears to be an ad for spyware removal software
with a "hotlink". I signed off and tried to run my spyware program and got an
error message that it could not be loaded. I then tried to run my virus
program, same thing. I then tried to get online to make sure my virus program
was updated, same thing. It has also did this with several other programs as
well as not allowing me to reset my computer to an earlier date (system
recovery) nor will it allow me to get rid of the spyware ad wallpaper. Has
anyone else ran into this problem? Any help or info would be greatly
appreciated. I can not find any info about a virus with these symptoms. Thanks

What's the name of your antivirus, and spyware program. What error messages.
What is the name of the spyware that's on your wallpaper. What has your home
page been changed to? Don't keep any secrets now.

Download, install, update and run all of the following.

Ad-Aware
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/aawsepersonal.exe

Spybot search and destroy
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/spybotsd14.exe

Ewido Security Suite Trial version
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/ewidosetup.exe

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta1)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads [...] laylang=en

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to this group so that
I can analyze it. Ignore anyone who tells you to post it elsewhere. I need
to see it not them.

If you need to run Hijackthis, contrary to pcbutts1 suggestion, don't
post it here. He has been told many times, but refuses to comply, that
this is not the forum to post hjt logs. Here are some good forums for
that with experts that will help you out:

Ok here is an update. I downloaded hijack this and saved a log of it on the
laptop, however I do not have a floppy disk on that computer only a cd
burner. Well as you may have guessed it. The burning program will not run so
I have no way of posting it anywhere.

Ok just run the others but if you have no internet access on that machine
then they probably won't catch everything because they need to be updated.

You really need to get that system online to run those updates.
