When I'm running the folding program, do I have to be connected to the internet or will it upload the results the next time I get online.
I have cable broadband so it's not a problem to stay online. Also I have it set to 80% processor speed and I let it run in the back ground all the time, and wonder what is going to happen in the morning when the system starts running the antivirus and antispyware programs.

dont put your monitor on standbymode, or you will have to restart your computer

Phuke, Is he running a variant of the Mandelbrot Bug program ?

And Phuke meant if your monitor goes into standby your progress on your application will stop running and you will have to start over...............

I have to turn my monitor on and off by hand.I cant get the power functions to work on it even though I loaded the viewsonic PF790 drivers for it.
That would really piss me off if I had to start over,I'm only at 12% and its been running since 12:23 pm EST.

Monitor standby is controlled in the POWER options in your Computer control panel. I am almost sure it would override just about any monitor and put it into standby weather it was Energy compliant or not.

In fact I have not seen a none energy compliant monitor for some time. I am not sure of the dates but I know the FCC and other implemented regulations on monitors years ago. More then a decade I am sure.....

Anyhows that was not the question you asked and I am not sure exactly what program you are running ? Explain if you please.

NEVER mind I read that yesterday and dismissed it. My son runs part of his computer time to SETI or some BS star crunching computer colony on the internet. He is so stubborn about it he continues to run it when he is playing games online!!!! SHRIEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and grrr.

I pay for my Extended high speed connection and got him DSL so his chit would not slow my chit and I pay for his chit and my chit and he loans out connection bandwidth to some group searching for ET's

Nothing special is going to happen when the antivirus runs (I hope) same thing happens here) it just slows down even more; though I don't run in 80 percent mode.

I'm running at only 80% CPU because I can back the fan down to 55% so it is quieter and still maintain an acceptable CPU temp (about 110 deg. f). When running the folding program and working on the internet at the same time it really doesn't slow it down that much.

I agree SETI is a waster of time, but Folding@Home isn't. It's all about simulating how proteins break down and has implications for treatment and prevention of many diseases and conditions.

The F@H client is also very well written, and only uses as much CPU power as is available at the time - it makes no difference to my gaming for instance.

Don't take my word for it. Read about it: <A HREF="http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html" target="_new">http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html</A>

That's Cool Chip, but my firewall is configured to filter and block all IP numbers from .edu IP numbers and my HTTP is also configured in my wall to block all network traffic from any www.edu websites. I also have UDP port blocks in place against many colleges and university's in North America and a few abroad.

I went 10 and 0 against some very industrious hackers for a few moths last year from some .edu IP numbers.

To many kids taking computer science in university then in their spare time running around the internet raping everything that is not locked up just to see what they can do. After they get working and are bound by a few new rules they do not yet know or understand they settle down to being respectable network engineers but for now lock em out and spit on them. Damn rug rats!!

So in short, Linky No Worky

I wonder if the phrase "Fold This!!" will catch on in computer circles lol.

I once had a woman tell me she would not fook me unless I had at least a 6 inch dick!! I looked right at her and said I DON'T fold it in half for any chick and left her sitting there PROTEIN deficient.

Funny thing I have an nV rig (FXgo 5200 + P42.8ghzHT) and an ATI rig (R9600P+Xp2000+) both running, both with monitors set to go into standy after 2 mins, and NEITHER has ever had a problem because of it (have had it once crash and lose a completed WU because F'in McAfee kicked in and killed everything during submission [took me 2hrs to figure out WTF happened!]). Dunno what's up with your issue, doesn't happen to either of my rigs. Saw your guys thread a while back, but long after the discussion progressed so didn't comment. I think it's a comp to comp problem/issue.

The one thing that did tick me off was the battery feature (had to figure out to turn off 'the pause when on battery') when using it during work and while on the couch watching TV, about 4 days worth (total hours of usual use) lost due to little progress on the laptop thanks to pausing.

LOL @ SOD's Protein 'Analysis'.

Finished my first WU today and am now on the second one.
I'm even listed on the team's stats (way down at the bottom).

Thanks,
It dosn't slow things down that much, and if I want to do something that requires a lot of CPU I just put the folding program on pause.

the only problem i had was with standby set to on , on my monitor, it would crash, but i have no problems with it running and me playing games and such. i dont even notice a diffrence. i do get a little more latency cuz i 4 computers hooked and using my router so, ehh its not enough to slow down the frags though so.

I hav'nt done anything with the other 450MHZ rig yet, I wonder how hard it would be and what kind of cables I'd need to hook them together?
Could I fold on both rigs that way??

yeah im folding on four right now...

do you have a router? if not you can let it fold and when it finishes a WU have it notify you when it needs to upload it and just hook it to your connection. and upload it and download a new fold.

Oh yea, since you guys got me straight on the tempature thing I'M RUNNING AT THE FULL CPU SPEED NOW, and the temp is at 50 C but that's with the fan at full RPM.

No router and it's a job to set it up in her at the desk...no room for another monitor only one modem etc...that's why I thought that if I could hook them together maybe they could use the same monitor and modem. Is there a way to do it with just cables, no router???

!#&$ <font color=blue> </font color=blue>---<font color=red><i><b>It's not heavy,...it's my computer</font color=red></i></b>

Reply to russell

you can buy you a KVM(keyboard video mouse) adapter/switch which allows you to use the same keyboard, mouse and monitor on multiple machines. i dont know about the modem though i would just set it up to ask you when it finishes a WU if you want to upload then connect that computer to the modem or whatever.

OK that was very helpful I found a <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-107-057&depa=0" target="_new"> KVM SWITCH </A> at new egg and the price is low enough. If I use this then all I gotta do is switch the modem cabel...GREAT...

THANKS
