New 8400 can't burn a DVD

Four attempts end with 90% or more complete. There is a write error
message displayed by Roxio's Media Creator 7 or the system locks and
requires a power-button shutdown.

I noticed in System Properties the date on the Microsoft driver for
the Philips DVD+-RW DVD8631 is dated 7/1/2001.

I'm using Verbatim DVD+R. Is there a media problem?

Any suggestions?

No. I noted there's an update on Dell's site. Is that what I should do
first?

It is a known issue with this burner. Dell has heard it a million
times.

Did you get the update for the burner on the Dell site?

I had the same problem and they replaced my Phillips. I updated it
with their file and can now burn + Media in DVD and - in CD. No way
can you burn a -dvd though.

Good luck. Read the forum boards in Dell. It might help to find a
solution.

My Philips failed completely (wouldn't read or write) and has been replaced.

I have the same problem - recently purchased Dell Dimension 4700, w/
Philips 8631 DVD-+RW drive. I've googled for many hours now and have
found many with the same problem. I've tried updating to both Dell's
BD31 and CD21 firmware but still have excessive delays when trying to
copy files from a DVD to hard drive (something like 8 minutes to copy a
100MB file)

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I should do next?
I've read I can update it to a BenQ firmware?

You can upgrade to a Benq but be aware if you do this and it fails
Dell will not warrent your drive.

If it were me I would request that Dell replace this drive with
another model. They know the problem with this drive but continue to
put it in new computers.

Actually it is a waste of money. No wonder their stock goes down.
