I dont NEED a laptop but i most certainly want one. I dont want one for gaming because after i saw a gaming laptop last 15min gaming i think i am just play frecell if i get bored.
I just need something to surf the web, type papers for school, and general computer stuff when i am not sitting at my desk.
I want something with a huge battery life. Like something that can hold 2 batteries.
I know a lot of you either use or are around a lot of laptops. I was curious if i could get some advice. All i need is wireless and long battery life. Weight isn't a huge concern but 50lbs would be a bit too much. And CPU power i would like somehting slower because slower usually means less power useage.
Intel Centrino is what you are looking for.
Dell rules the roost in reasonably low cost Notebooks, IBM makes the best, but they know it and charge accordingly.

And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" Huh
So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign

Plug the laptop into the wall socket directly, don't use a charger. This will greatly increase the battery life. For a quicker charge do it barefoot on a wet floor. Let me know how you get on.

Pentium M laptops. For slower CPU and less wattage, go for the ULV Pentium M or if there are any, ULV Celeron Ms. Even less wattage there.
You can achieve a good 5 hours with such system.
Look into HP too, they got great bundles. Albeit, the whole thing sucks up resources.
Look for the DV1010CA model with the Celeron M 1.4GHZ (IIRC). You should like that. Comes with a DVD burner and HP's nifty features. Wireless included and works really easily using the Windows XP wireless setup. I tried it at work, easy as heck to set up. Press the wireless button on the laptop, it finds those around you, you choose the one you want and boom, voilà.
If you want an overall faster CPU, the DV1040CA is the Pentium M edition of that laptop and comes with those freakin' nice LCD film screen. It covers the LCD in a way to create this sort of highly glossy surface which in turn gives an overall sharper and much nicer more contrasted image (a problem laptop LCDs often suffer from, due to angle of vision).
Toshibas are good laptops but lack software bundles. Averatec's not bad either but much less known, so support would be harder.
Compaqs are generally HP replicates, being from the same company, but they might differ in them often being more low performance or lacking some technologies.
Anyways, in the end, you can't get any better battery life than with Pentium Ms, no matter if you buy a high capacity battery for so much money, on a Pentium 4 mobile or AthlonXP M. Pentium Ms are simply built from the ground up for battery life. And you will often find thin n' light notebooks using them or Celeron Ms. Speaking of which, the HP DV10x0 laptops are quite portable. Not sure if we can call them thin and light but definitely they are in the portable range.
BTW a tip: don't skimp on laptop warranty. No matter from who you buy the laptop from, take one as a worthy investment. Make sure it also covers the battery.
Hope this helps.
Now can you bend over?

I took your advice, i couldn't fit the battery into the wall socket so i went down the road to the transformer station. I figured that would instantly charge it.....boy oh boy was i wrong. Well once i woke up 3days later i realized maybe that wasn't the best idea.
I know to go with a Pentium M or Celeron M....Whats the performance difference between the two? Is it rediculously huge like the desktop ones?
I know that 4-5hours is max on one battery but i was looking for something that has an optional 2nd battery that i could throw into an optical slot. I am away from my house for about 12-16hours a day and i dont really want to have to carry everything around with me (charger, case, extra battery, and all that) I am looking more for something that i grab when i leave and its just the laptop not a whole setup of things.
Weight doesn't bother me, i am a pretty big guy and i am not actually carrying it around the whole day, just to and from my car and when at school from class to class. Wireless and something thats like 8-10hour battery life would be perfect. Anything more then that is a bonus.
My feet were wet....it was raining...i live in seattle.
Seattle in the winter, it rains a lot
lmao, doesnt it rain about 324 days of the year there?

The performance difference between both CPUs will likely be about 10% to 15% on average. I suggest you head to a nearby retail store like Staples or Best Buy, they might have the HP DV10xx serie with the Celeron M and Pentium M. Judge by trying out the different software HP provides on the laptop and see how performance differs. IMO just the extra shiny film on the LCD justifies the higher cost of the Pentium M version. It's just too freakin' nice, and allows for much better image quality.
For optional battery, alas I am not knowledgeable about this. You could always contact the big firms and see what they have to suggest.
You can be sure wireless is included, that's almost a standard on all laptops nowadays. DVD burners are soon becoming the new standard too.
So check for the battery with the manufacturer to know more about which model supports equipping second batteries and for how much.

Seattle....no it doesn't rain 324days a year. The # of days it rains is a lot but it doesn't rain a lot in inches. Almost everywhere on the eastcoast gets more then seattle in volume.
Alright, i have looked around a little with laptops. I am still kinda lost on what i want and what is what. A lot seem very similar.
I know i want a wireless mouse for this laptop. And i was thinking about making my desktop mouse/keyboard wireless as well if i can find a good set. I know the MX1000 just came out. For a $70 why is that so good? What are good wireless mice, and what keyboards are good?
As for lag.....i dont game a whole bunch. I do from time to time. Maybe 10hours a week. and a small lag wont hurt my ability to run around and get shot a lot. So a small lag that would annoy a big time gamer, i may not even notice.
I am looking to spend about 50-80bucks total for the mouse&keyboard. and i would prefer to spend less.
Is the MX1000 worth it? why? Or what do you guys think?
Thanx
Things sure have changed here. Where has all the love"The gay animalistic kind"gone? The new people that blindly come into this pit dont get properly reemed out anymore. Hell, I still dont walk the same after that hazing yall gave me
Pentium M. If it looks small and weighs more than you think it should, chances are it has a larger battery!

One thing you can try to do, is simply walk into a tech store and ask the sales reps what they suggest. Sure, it's not the most educated way (hell I wouldn't do it either before researching, but if left with no choice, why not) but usually they give you some good advice if you give them enough detailed criteria. I think what I suggest here should be reflected by them, otherwise it may not be so true or I might be wrong (tell me what you hear).
I think service is also important in a laptop, if you have an extended warranty. You want to trust the company you bought from in case your gear gets damaged. Since you are planning extensive battery use, I seriously recommend an extended warranty that covers the battery. You won't regret it man.
The Logitech MX1000 is good for designers and harcore gamers that need decimal-level movement, and it usually sports an improved support for various surfaces. It's the first laser mouse, but seems to be very good. Not worth the price if you're not fitting into those criteria though.
I suggest for a combo, the Logitech LX300 or 500. They've been well reviewed by THG, and have good polished keyboards. The LX700 is the most appealing one, with the keyboard's features and the Click! Plus mouse (IIRC that's the mouse included). All wireless of course.
Microsoft keyboard and mouse combos aren't bad either though.
For individual wireless mice however, you can't go wrong with the MX serie. MX310 for base comfort (what I have now) and nice two-button navigation (on each side), MX510 for that extra grip and MX1000 for the ultimate. Also, the MS Intellimouse Explorer is pretty damn nice IMO. Very nice design and grip, with that innovative side scrolling wheel too. I haven't seen any tests of it for gaming though, but it is most definitely a nice mouse, one I'd put for the laptop had I not already have one (an old 2001 version though, nothing like the new one)
So for the mouse and keyboard stuff, stick with MS and Logitech, they got the goods usually. Labtec if you want budget priced stuff (they're owned by Logitech mind you).

Good? i won the regular season and then i was a b*tch in the first post season game. I was like that Sonics team that lost to the Nuggets.......or any of those 2seeds that lose to 15's in March madness.
It was because D. Nabb was going easy because he had nothing to play for and T.O. wasn't there to throw to. I got raped.
OH there it is,[inserts cork].....turns toward wingey..sticks out tongue, thumbs in ears wiggling fingers....laughs at wingey and runs away like the wind.
!#&$ ---It's not heavy,...it's my computer
i need more power too.
Got a 186 (3.0L) straight 6 in my car... but i need more low end torque, even though its quite grunty allready with a cam and extractors.
Might get a AU$1800 (US$1200) supercharger kit.
These motors are quite tuff, and provided the compression ratio is correct can easily take the 6 or 10 psi the charger produces!
mmm power
