I am about to replace my existing Dell Dimension SPS 450 with a newer Dell
computer. I am looking at either the 4700 or 8400, both pretty much
configured the same (3.2 GHz processor, 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, 80 GB
harddrive, SP home edition operating system). The 4700 system prices out
at $1120, and the 8400 at $1220. The computer is for home use, mainly
e-mail, internet, home finance and word processing, some Excel and
Powerpoint work, digital photography work, some music, and light game
playing. I assume either system would be adequate for what I want to do,
but would it be worth the extra $100 to get the 8400 instead of the 4700?
Is the basic configuration I'm considering reasonable for what I plan to
do? What do you experts think?

Thanks - Chuck

Either should suit your needs. But make sure you check sites
like www.techbargains.com and www.dealcatcher.com.
The price you quoted (if US prices) seems way high.
You should be able to get the 4700 with what you show AND a 17flat
panel
for about 600-800 us...maybe less.
This is the current one I see (without monitor) US $449.00:
Dimension 4700
2.80GHz Pentium 4 processor w/800MHz FSB
XP Home
512MB Memory
80GB S-ATA Hard Drive
48x CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo
2 Year Warranty

Best wishes..
Dave

The 8400 has a roomier case and a few more options for expansion.

I'm certainly no expert but I can tell you that, in December, I bought a new
8400 and my wife bought a new 4700. She bought a 17" flat panel and I bought
a 19" flat panel. After using hers a little bit and looking at what you plan
on using it for, I think that you'll do well saving the extra money and
getting the 4700. You may want to upgrade your memory to 1GB with the price
difference. Either way, I think you'd be very happy with the 4700.

I ended up doing what you are suggesting - I ordered the 4700 with a 3.2
GHz processor, 1 GB memory, and the 17 inch flat panel monitor. Thanks to
you, and the others, for your input. If the 4700 lasts as long as the 450
did, I will be happy!

You won't regret the memory upgrade. Enjoy your new computer when you get
it!

I know what you mean about your old computer. I upgraded from a Dimension
T550 that's still going strong but I *really* like my new computer!
