Hello,

has anyone ever tried using a non-original DVD/CD-RW drive in a Omnibook
6000? Original DVD/CDRW drives usually sell for about 120 EUR at ebay
whereas new DVD burners sell for around 80 bucks.

I still have a 24x CD drive and am willing to unmantle the rails to try a
decent DVD drive which as I've heart should have standardized connectors
(and standardized positions, of course). Is that true? As I understand the
front plate also has to match in size and form. I could switch that one as
well, in case it fits.

In case someone has already successfully tried, which drive can you
recommend, which will work?

I put a Toshiba SDR-6112 DVD writer in my Omnibook 500 (same drives as the
6000), switching the frame and front plate from a stock DVD. I have also used
CD-writers using the frame from a salvaged CD while keeping the CD-writer's
front plate. The stock drive's front panel does not match its opening but it
does work. Of course you will need a slimline drive, and they tend to be more
expensive than the desktop versions.
