Help With USB headset Mic

Hi guys, I know this is my first post so I'm sorry that it is to ask for help.

I own a set of Turtle Beach X11 headphones that I originally bought for use with my 360. However, I discovered I could use them for PC too so I now use them primarily for teamspeak and such. To start with I had no problem setting it up: Just plugged in the USB lead, mic lead into pink jack, audio into green jack and everything worked fine without the need for drivers or any set up.

Everything has worked fine for weeks but all of a sudden my microphone is no longer detected by my PC. The headset speakers work fine, I can hear other people but they cant hear me. The weird thing is I can hear myself speak through the speakers when i speak into the mic, so clearly it isnt a hardware issue but something else has changed by itself.

The only thing I did before the mic stopped working (Aside from use teamspeak like normal) was to install hamachi and to try and use the STEAM voice chat feature, out of curiosity. I first assumed that one of these had maybe interfered so I did a rollback but that didnt help.

I have tried all the basic stuff and am pretty sure my sound card drivers are up to date that I know of but any help would be very much appreciated.

it really sounds like your microphone is no longer selected in the audio properties.

i have windows xp and there have been times when i select 'microphone' in the soundcard software.. but it doesnt work because a different recording device is selected in the audio control panel.

i have to go to start/control panel/sound and audio devices/audio tab/sound recording .. then select the appropriate device.

there is also another place to change the recording input.
its a different tab.

IF that doesnt work..
maybe you have to select the microphone with the windows mixer.
that is start/control panel/sound and audio devices/volume tab/device volume/advanced

a window pops up with a bunch of volume bars.
press 'options'
select 'properties' from the drop down.
make sure your soundcard is selected for 'mixer device' and select 'record' from the 'adjust volume for' section.

you will see the list change down below.
make sure all of them have a check mark and press ok.

now you should be looking at all of your recording options.
find the one that says 'microphone' and tick the box at the bottom of the volume slider.

that will select the microphone to be used for recording.
and if you want to stop hearing yourself talk when you speak into the microphone.. you have to mute it.
to do that you go start/control panel/audio and sound devices/device volume/advanced/options/properties/playback

make sure all of the boxes have a checkmark and press ok.
a new window pops up showing you all of the volume sliders for playback.
find the one that says 'microphone' and tick the box next to mute.
this will still allow you to speak into the microphone and be heard by other people.. you simply wont hear your voice over your speakers anymore.

and if none of that works.. try reinstalling the soundcard drivers.
if that doesnt work.. its time to erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

i apologize if you are using a different operating system.
i dont know how to navigate through those operating sytems.
but its quite the same, just different names.

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate the time you took to help. Unfortunately I have already taken all the measures suggested. My sound card (C-Media CM6501 like sound device) is the only option available for mixer device and so i have that selected. Microphone is also selected for the recording option both on the windows menu and on the c-media utility program for my Sound card.

I would try updating/reinstalling my sound card's drivers but I havent been able to find a working link to any drivers.

My exact Sound card model is C-Media CM6501 like sound device, which is just an onboard sound card for the Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard i think. My current driver version is 5.12.0008.1803, dated to 10/07/2007.

As far as I can tell this is also the most up to date driver for windows XP.

I didnt think it would be a problem with my sound card or driver since all other aspects of audio work fine, just the microphone that wont work.

If anyone can point me towards a working driver for this card or give any other suggestions I would love you long time.

have you actually tried changing something and then putting it back?
because sometimes a program will say it has something selected, but the registry settings will say something entirely different.

sometimes the most up to date driver isnt the best solution.

I tried a few different drivers but none seem to work. I have pretty good antivirus software and if someone hacked me im sure theyd do more than mess around with my sound settings.

Say I wanted to buy a new sound card and install on my machine, would any card be compatible? and how would i go about disabling my motherboard's on board sound card?

most of the soundcards on the market today are PCI
that means they plug into the PCI slot.
all motherboards have PCI slots.. it just depends on whether you have one that is empty.
getting a new soundcard isnt difficult to do.
searching for the right soundcard is harder than plugging it in..!

if you can plug in a lamp or television or phone cord.. or even a charger on a phone - you can plug in a soundcard.
you should use a little bit more care to keep the card straight with the socket.. because it is a tight fit and doesnt allow much to be wrong with the angle.
i suppose people are scared because it takes a bit of force to plug something in.. but that is the nature of the socket.
its a tight fit because the slot is reading from pins and they have to make contact with eachother to work.

i'm not really trying to imply that you get a new soundcard, because the one you have is supposed to work.

but i wouldnt hold doubt to malware changing something.
it is the job of malware to be annoying.
and it is the job of a virus to damage data.

the annoyances usually come at random and its not like you were selected and had some hacker manually trying to upload an annoyance.
that stuff is usually automated.

anyways.. if the other drivers installed, but didnt fix the problem, you have a problem obviously.. and i would be leaning towards software as the cause.
you do know that it takes less than an hour to reinstall the operating system dont you?
its very easy to do if you have the disc because there are instructions on the screen.
the only severe problem that is often occuring is the fact that if you have your hard drives in a RAID configuration.. you have to feed the operating system those RAID drivers from a floppy drive before the installation can start.

i think a PC technician would try to work with the drivers and make sure all of the registry settings are properly set.
and that might fix the problem before needing to move on.
but if it doesnt, they would reinstall the operating system to see if that helps.
and if that doesnt work, they would either try to diagnose the electrical components of the soundcard .. or they would simply say that its broken.

there are some benefits to using an aftermarket soundcard.
the biggest one is the fact that a quality soundcard will have its own processor .. which takes the load off of your main processor.
you can then look at features the soundcard has to really make the change more enjoyable.
things like virtual surround and/or dolby decoding for movies.. these two should be the biggest concerns.
then a much needed time alignment of the audio if you are not using headphones.

is there any way you can test the headphones and mic on a different computer?
i am just trying to rule out a problem with the microphone actually sending data to the computer.. or is the little amplifier in the cord malfunctioning?

to do that, you would need to plug the microphone into something else.. or get something else to plug into the microphone input of the soundcard.
you can use headphones as a microphone.. but you have to put your mouth right up to the headphone speaker because the headphones arent sensitive enough.
simply using the 'sound recorder' program that comes with windows would work to record something plugged into the microphone jack on the soundcard.. then play the recording back to listen for anything.

to disable the onboard soundcard, there should be an option in the BIOS of the motherboard.
you enter the BIOS after you start the computer, before the operating system starts to load.
usually there is instructions on the screen telling you to push F8 or the delete key to enter BIOS.

I got a friend who is a little more tech savvy to reinstall my OS, which didnt work initially but then after restarting my comp a few times it decided it would like to let my mic work again I cant explain it, its like it has a mind of its own but ah well, it is now fixed so i will not complain.
