My STTNG right hand cannon on power up always fires a few times and rotates
then settles back to the right position and works fine. Where as the left
hand cannon works fine and does not move on power up.

I have replaced the wiring loom on the right one, check all connections.
Opto works fine etc.

Any suggestions as to why it does this. It kinda seems like on power up it
thinks there is a ball in the cannon and is trying to kick it out. I have
check the opto's they seem fine. Also if I put a ball in the cannon when
in attact mode or block the opto it will fire and rotate just like on power
up.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Try swapping the optos to the other cannon and see if the problem moves. It
sounds like flaky opto, or power to them is dropping. Then I'd suspect weak
connector at the opto driver board or maybe problems there. LTG :)

This has been discussed on the NG before. Seems it may be normal behavior.
If it works fine in game mode then there is probably nothing wrong with it.

Have you checked the under playfield limit switches? Maybe it doesn't
know where the cannon is.

Quite strange: on mine at power up the left cannon move one time, fire one
time and return back on position, the right one doens'nt move.

Both are working fine in game, rom L7, so i don't know the real théorical
init sequence ?

What should happen on power up is that it checks to make sure there are
balls in the subway to be fired from the canon as need be.

If there are balls in the subway when you power up, the canons should
swing out and then back to test the limit switches.

If there are no balls in the subway, it will fire a couple of balls down
there. If there is a problem with the optos, it may keep doing this.

That's my understanding anyhow.

Clean your optos in the canons, and under the canons in the popper area.
Put the game into switch test and make sure all for a good and not
intermitent.

If your right canon isn't moving at powerup, I would also check the
limit switches under the canon.

During Final Frontier the machine will eventually autofire the cannons
if you don't do it yourself. I try to set my switches to make a shot.
Right cannon Alpha ramp, left cannon Beta ramp. Not sure that it
really works. They probably hit a different spot depending on if they
are sweeping right or left at the time. I usually fire them manually
during FF just to get them into play faster.

One question about that, the two cannons are working perfecly, but in
'cannon' test mode i discovered that 'home' switch is ok, but 'point' switch
doesn't close at the same time on right cannon. What is the good setup ?

both 'home' and 'point' switches should open and close at the same time

or

point switch should open and close when cannon is in the middle of the move
?

I don't know the good setting and didn't find it in the documentation.

Anyone could check that in cannon test mode ?

I never noticed that before. Mine is the same. I think the point/mark
switch tells the game where to shoot the ball if there is a ball in the
cannon not being fired and it needs to autofire.

My left canon is pointed at the jet bumpers and my right is pointed at
the neutral zone.

This would avoid the ball being fired and smashing into a ramp and
cccrrraaacckk! $100 down the drain in one shot!

Cheers
MacMan

Good idea but I wouldn't want the timing to be a bit off otherwise there
goes the ramp entrance.

I might try my left on Start Mission and the right on the spinner.
