Crackle and Pop as Windows Starts

For some unknown reason as Windows starts the introductory audio clip starts
to play then there is a loud crackle an pop then it finishes playing.
Apparently something is conflicting with the audio. Can anyone guide me in
isolating and correcting this issue.

I didn't think to look in the KB as the issue just started happening a week
or so ago (I installed XP more than a year ago).
