Can i have hdmi cables and component cables hooked up together

Forum Home Theatre : HDTV Can i have hdmi cables and component cables hooked up together

I have just replaced my old dvd player with a new sony blu ray.
I have been told not to settle for the av cable (that came with the player), which I have attached to my home Denon theater receiver....

Use 2 new HDMI cables I have been told.... One HDMI cable from the Denon to my HD tv... and the second from my blu ray to the Denon.

The merchant who sold me the whole system 2 years ago said to leave all of the existing componet cables currently hooked up as they are currently and just add the 2 HDMI cables.

My question is ... does this make sense, why would I leave the current component cables in place with HDMI supposedly being the magic cable.

Thanks for your advice.
