Tech: Sys 80 Flipper Flutter

Hi All,

I've googled this and found a lot of different answers that may be
causing it. Just thought I'd run this by you guys and see if you can
help me narrow it down.

I'm working on a Black Hole. Two of the flippers on the main playfield
flutter wildly when activated. The other two are fine. The EOS switches
are adjusted properly (normally closed and only opened towards the end
of stroke) and also clean. When I bend the EOS switches away from the
paw so they wont be opened by the flipper the flutter goes away when the
flipper is activated. The flippers seem to work fine. Then when I hold
the flipper button in and keep the flipper activated, I'll manually open
the EOS switch and the flipper coil will turn off and the flipper will
fall back to rest even though the flipper button is still pressed.

Is this a bad coil with a broken winding problem? I question this
because it looks like someone installed new coils not to long ago. All
wires are hooked up properly and the little wires coming out of the coil
look fine.

Thanks for the help,
Dave

Yes.

Have you checked the coils with an Ohmeter?

You will need to disconnect them, or at least place
a piece of paper between the EOS contacts.

Your game manual should give the specs on the
coil(s) based on the part number/coil number.

There is a slim possibility that the coil is wired
backwards, (Left to right, "outside" two wires).

Dave,

I'm not sure about Sys80, but other manufacturers at the time had a
piggy-back switch on the main flippers that would feed power to the other
flippers. Those switches can get pitted and arc, causing flutter.

Also, if they are dual-would coils, the smaller wire coming off the coil
could be broken. Bypassing the EOS and holding the flipper button will
overheat the flipper in a hurry.

Try this: pull the GI and feature lamp power fuses, raise the playfield,
turn off all the lights in the room and press the flipper button. Now look
for arcing around the flipper assemblies. If you see any, file the points on
the switch that sparks.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly after trying this out it's still not working
properly. I really think I need new coils.

Thanks again, Dave
