I was wondering if there is a way to 'kill' a program. Basically for the
last few days my windows seems to crash/hang (whatever you want to call
it) whenever loading various applications. It seems to be a result of
high cpu usage. anyway after is stops i cant end the task or end the
process or process tree. It just sits there. I cannot open another
instance of the applications either. so my only option is to reboot. I
was wondering if there is an application or command that can kill the
process. Thus, saving me from rebooting everytime as the shutdown takes
along time as well.

Also are there any tips on shutting down quickly which making my system
unstable.

im considering linux as windows just has too many problems.

thanks

Under the process tab you can't right click and select "End Process Tree"
and have it go away?

keep quite what ?....og...you meant QUIET.

so what applications cause this ? regular apps, internet apps ? are there
any odd processes running ? has anything been installed right before this
started ? by you intentionally, or as a unknown 'browse-by' install ?

did you do virus/trojan scan ? spyware scan ? anything in the event log ?

Mr. Z

You must always remember there are other creatures in the sea when you
wade into the water to harvest the pearls. You are lucky....you were
just nipped by one of the fishes. There are...(shudder)...sharks among
us always ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey.

You have been warned. Go in peace.

I assume by saying you couldn't end the task that you used CTRL-ALT-DEL and
that didn't bring up the end task option? Sometimes a program is defective
but keeps trying to finish loading and that brings up a situation where
nothing else can be used and End Task doesn't work either. Either repair or
delete the offending program(s).

It occurs during a variety of of applications like macromedia director
mx, windows media player, thunderbird, bitcomet to name just a few.

Its not really a problem with the applications as such as they none of
them really affect the other. I guess its more of a 'windows' system
problem. I had numerous problems with windows resulting in me having a
variety of bsod and not be able to boot up. I have since reformatted the
drive and reinstalled windows.

Anyway, yeah they programs crash. I CTRL-ALT-DEL it and get the task
manager. I then try to 'end task' it but although the dialogue box comes
up when you end the task nothing happens. I then attempt to kill the
process. same. process tree. same again. I believe that killing the
process should ideally work in the same way that a kill command works
but as I said nothing happens the application just stays frozen.

Thanks for any/all help,

Zankhna (btw lol Miss not Mr)

ps when I say im considering Linux I mean that as another partitioned os
and manly for developer reasons. Also there is alot more flexibility
over Linux then windows or so I am told.

LOL...not intended to label you, but rather as advice for *MISS* Z. I
didn't want *HER* response to a "little snippy remark" draw the ever
present sharks.
