TV sound from Computer speakers

I want to set up a surround sound system with my pc and connect it to my tv. The motherboard on my pc has 7.1 surround so i want the sound coming from my tv to come from the speakers connected to my computer.

I have gotten the surround sound to work when i am using the pc. But I want the speakers to work when i am watching cable tv or playing xbox 360.

I tried to connect the tv audio to the line in jack on the pc but i still get nothing.

Any suggestion?

btw: I know i can buy a reciever but i would really like to avoid paying for one.

What brand, model your speaker system and your TV? If the speaker has decoder with digital audio input and the TV has digital audio output then your fine. If not, try connecting your xbox to your TV with HDMI cable then your TV SPDI/F output to your computer. If that doesn't work then you'll need to spend some $$$ for equipment.
