Building computer for sister-in-law. No overclocking right now. Need to last thru last year of highschool and some college. Newegg has the barton 2500 for $90 and the XP 2600 for $101. Both come with stock heatsink.
Main uses will be internet, Powerpoint, burning and maybe dvd watching and possible games in future.

Would it be better to get the 2500 barton or the athlon 2600?

Well, did some searching and I guess ill get the barton 2500 and just OC it alittle to match the 2600 speed. The things she will be working on might benefit from the extra cache anyways.
anyway this is what i got so far. Case and powersupply bought in town:

Does it really matter? For the uses you mention I don't think it will.

Spend the extra $11 on an extra case fan with a thermal sensor (quieter). Put it towards a bigger disk. Look for a slightly better graphics card (for the games).

If still in doubt, make an executive decision: flip a coin

Will be using th onboard for now. If she wants better graphics she can get a better card. She doesnt play at all right now. Mainly for school work.
Picked up an antec 92mm case fan with the thermal sensor today when I bought the case. Will run temps after its built to see if I need more fans. But I dought it.

You are right to put in another case fan.
I popped an 80mm Antec in my AMD box and the difference between the CPU and the case dropped 5 Celcius and the case temp dropped too.

I just upgraded from a AMD 1800+ to a Barton 2500. I wasn't sure if the cost was worth it, but I wanted to see how my system ran at 333 FSB, rather than 266 (I have PC2700 ram).

I am very pleased... over all performance is great.
I was able to OC to 2.0GHz by changing the multiplier to 12, without messing with any other settings. Runs great.

Thanks,
Bill
