Problems like that are usually hardware, power-related, or a bad driver.

You are essentially blue-screening and are set to reboot when that happens.
On the "Advanced" tab, under "Startup and Recovery," click "Settings," then
under "System failure," uncheck the box "Automatically restart." That will
prevent it restarting and keep the blue screen up. Copy down the blue screen
error message and post it here.

The system is likely encountering a fatal error and the automatically restart option has been selected in start up and recovery options.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties/Advanced Tab/Start up and Recovery/Settings Button.

Under System Failure, uncheck the Automatically Restart option. This will allow the error to be displayed when the problem is encountered.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. Click the 3 menu items on the left and look for any "X" error messages. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details. If you find an error that is coincidng with the behavior, click the Copy Icon on the details dialog screen and paste the error details in a reply to this message.

Go to Start/Run and type msinfo32 and press OK. Click Components/Problem Devices to check for possible hardware problems.

Depending on if after turning off the automatic restart you see a blue
screen error message, check the system for overheating. Open the case,
blow out the dust bunnies. Are the fans running?

Check the capacitors on the motherboard. Are any bulging or leaking?

Check the ram using these two memory testers:
Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/

Windows Memory Diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Let them run for awhile, not just one pass. If errors show up replace
the memory.

Could also be the power supply or motherboard.

I came across a computer where the screen just blacked out and went into
reboot mode.. the power supply, which was hopelessly inadequate anyway, was
changed, but still the same.. a motherboard change cured the problem..

If you don't get a blue screen before the black one, it is a hardware issue
and has nothing to do with Windows operation other than at each crash,
Windows files will get screwed up..

Rock:

Having same prob - WinXP Pro 2002. Will be working along, suddenly screen
goes black, then a quick blink of a blue screen FILLED with typing (don't
even have time to make out the first 6 words, much less a sentence), then the
re-boot.

Through this newsgroup, went looking for "blue screen". Very helpful, found
how to set my pc so it won't fly by that blue screen. Also found how to look
up the event logs, but they're all gibberish, so that's one for my wizard to
use.

Went to memtest.org, found a lot of files to download, but I don't have a
clue how to choose which I need. I presume the memory diagnostic site will
have the same style to choose from. Where do I go from here? If I knew
which to download, I could have them ready for my wizard, or maybe even run
them myself one day. "Let them run for a while, not just one pass"; would a
lunch hour be long enough, or should it be overnight?

Here is information on how to use Memtest86+:

You will either download the precompiled Windows binary to make a
bootable floppy or the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use
the latter, you'll need to have third-party burning software on the
machine where you download the file - XP's built-in burning capability
won't do the job. In either case, boot with the media you made. The
test will run immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless
errors are seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.

In addition to what Malke said there was a recent post where the OP ran
memtest for several hours no errors, then left it on over night and had
10 errors. Dell (I think it was) was sending him replacement memory.
It's not a bad idea to run the Windows Memory Diagnositic as well.
