A friend of mine has an older Dimension running Windows ME, one of the
world's true catastophes. Imo, at least.

He now wants to upgrade to XP Pro. He's tired of his many daily crashes.

But, he doesn't have much money and Xp Pro upgrades from CompUSA, Amazon,
etc. go for at least $160.

Looking on line at pricewatch I see that one can get OEM versions (with
key, CD) for about $130.

Will these work? Or, is his system too Dell specific?

TIA.

P.S. What does COA stand for?

Here's a sample ad from #9 Software (not an OEM version apparently)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP Pro NFR integrates the strengths of Windows 2000 Pro, such as
standards-based security, manageability, and reliability, with the best
business features of Win 98 and Win ME Edit. CD-Rom. Not for Resale or Oem
Distribution. End Users License Agreement on installation of media.

Price: $120.00

zipzoomfly has the OEM full version for $135 with free shiping. You just
have to buy a small hardware piece. Details are at the site.

Yep. Home and upgrade can be found for $90 and up from legitimate sites like
ZZF and others. Also, if the owner of the OP's machine in question has
legitimate claim to such, XP Pro can be bought for $85 with an academic
license.

Roy;
COA = Certificate of Authenticity
Be very suspicious of that.
"NFR" in reference to Microsoft software means "Not for resale".
Many kinds of Microsoft software is available this way including
operating systems.
If NFR is sold, something illegal is happening.

Also OEM normally is Clean Install only, no upgrade capability.

any version of XP will work on your friends old system. full version or
upgrade version (since he/she has winme), retail or oem (original equipment
manufacturer, the version that comes bundled with a system and does not
include a box for the software). the number 9 software people are legitimate
resellers though you have to know what it is that you are buying. coa means
certificate of authenticity; in other works the license sticker with serial
number that is usually found affixed to new computers. if you just purchase
the coa then you must supply the software cd. if you purchase a oem coa
then you must have an oem version of the software in order for the serial
number to activate that installation. if you already have an oem software
cd then you would purchase just the winxp pro coa for about $85 from number
9 software. if you need the cd they also sell a dell oem win xp pro
reinstallation cd for $50. i don't understand what they mean by the other
version they offer marked not for resale... sounds odd, but i can't imaging
that they want to be put out of business by breaking the law so i would
suspect it means that the buyer of the item can not resell it, but you will
have to ask them for the details.

well, i should also state this...
i realize now that you didn't state the model of the 'old pc' in question
and broke my own rule for not replying to questions that lack a specific
model number... your friends system should have at least 128mb of ram (256
offering a big improvement) and at least 10gb hard disk (windows xp plus
office 2000 professional and antivirus takes up about 6gb) and you need a
pentium ii or higher.

Any suggestions as to where for $90 or so for XP-Pro, CD + COA?

The cheapest I found was the one at ZZF for $120.

Roy

P.S. Thanks to all for your helpful responses!!
