I have a computer with dual AMD opterons. When I purchased it was
configured with windows 2000. I use a 3D animation software that will
release a 64 bit version in the next month.

I would like to upgrade to x64 but cannot participate in the exchange. I
downloaded the trail but am hesitant to install it because I do not know of
the availability of a full retail version that I can eventually upgrade to.

How can i upgrade to a full version and when will such a version be available?

You might want to check first that hw drivers for 64bit are available for
your sys, prior to any update/install

I don't know whether a "retail" version of XP 64 Pro will *ever* be
available.

You may recall Win95 OSR2 (which added FAT32 to Win95). It never went
retail. Its features became available in retail form in the Win98 upgrade.

The currently available version of XP 64 is OEM only, which means that
Microsoft provides no support for it. It is intended to be pre-installed by
PC vendors, but it can be purchased separately. (Example: www.newegg.com .)
I believe there is a way to convert the trial version to the OEM one without
doing a format and re-install, but I have not done it.

In fact, I downloaded the trial, but I have not installed it. Some of my
peripherals have no X64 drivers available. Also, I don't need to address
lots of RAM or virtual memory. I use no revenue-producing applications that
are available in 64 bit versions.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

To date, Microsoft has not announced any intention of ever providing a
*retail* license for WinXPx64. The only WinXPx64 license currently --
and for the foreseeable future -- available is an OEM license. This
means that you'll be able to purchase WinXPx64 either pre-installed on a
computer, or with some qualifying piece of non-peripheral hardware.
And, of course, an OEM license cannot, by design, be used to perform an
upgrade over an earlier OS; a clean installation is required.
