8400 can't burn DVD

After using cd21.exe, downloaded from dell.com, to flash the Philips
DVD burner's firmware I successfull burned one DVD to about half
capacity. Burn speed went from 4x before flash to 15x afterward. Then
three failures with the same message:

Errors occurred during the recording:
Disc 1 of 10
"D: PHILIPS DVD+-rw DVD87631 ('Session Fixation Error while writing
lead in - Medium error.' [03/72/01])"

Disc progress 99%. Next two attempts zero percent, same error report.
System restarted before each attempt. Using Verbatim DVD+R discs.

How do I get this to work? The incessant failures are costing me a lot
of time.

I've got an 8400 as well (MCE 2005). I've been burning CD's OK. Have
not yet tried to do a DVD.

What's the purpose of the cd21.exe file? Is the firmware as shipped faulty?

Keep posting with updates, please.

Maybe trying a different brand of DVDs would work?

The unit I received had faulty firmware. You can get cd21.exe from
Dell's web sight by entering your service tag, etc. But don't do so
unless you'r sure it's needed.

Tom, you should know that when you respond without providing a
solution the posted response is seen by others who often assume a
solution has been provided. Consequently, many who might otherwise
respond with a solution do not bother to look at the original post.
You can wait until there is solution posted, then chime in. I've
reposted in hopes of avoiding this problem.

If you do have a problem, I suggest you don't bother with Dell's chat
support. I had a most rediculous on-line experience with that. The guy
in India, with the obviously Indian name "John," was, at one point,
referring to a Windows 98 source book in spite of claiming he had my
service tag. At first he didn't know what a service tag is. In the end
he had not answered my questions and he had suggested reinstalling
Sonic MyDVD from the Dell-supplied CD to fix the burner's driver
problem.

It wasn't until i posted the problem in this group that cd21.exe was
suggested.

Good luck with your first DVD burn. Let us know your results,
especially if you have a Philips burner. And if you succeed, perhaps
you can post the media manufacturer and type.
