Hi folks--

I have a Dell Inspiron 3700 that I bought in 1999 and is still going strong.
As it is my *second/backup* system, I'm happy with it and haven't upgraded
it since I bought it, other than moving up to Windows ME, and upgrading the
IE/OE software when necessary. I have 256 MB RAM in the computer, and only
occasionally run MS Word, or less frequently, Excel.

However, the curser occasionally gets hard to control and point. For
example, when I'm in OE and in the newsgroups window, I find it difficult to
move the curser/pointer around to select a message thread or close a message
window. This happens when OE is open on its own, or with other programs
(like IE or Real One) open at the same time.

Does anyone here on the newsgroup have ideas on what's causing this? I've
checked my mouse settings and they are the way I like them, so I don't
really think that's the problem, but I'm open to changing them if it would
fix the problem. The problem is quite troublesome at times and I'd really
like to get it fixed!

Is it a little pointy stick? Does it get hard to move for 10-30 seconds and
then work fine?

If so, that's normal. They occasionally calibrate themselves. My IBM
Thinkpad does too.

Thanks for replying. Once the pointer starts acting up, it stays that way
until I close everything and restart the computer. I have to restart in
order to resolve the problem, just closing out the programs and reopeniing
them doesn't help.

I frequently had a problem that sounded very much like yours when using a
win95 machine in work - the print spool was the problem with ours - it'd
fall over, and slowly take the rest of the machine with it.

This may seem odd, but I was having the same problems with my mouse
cursor. What was odd, was the problem was the mouse pad I was using
with my optical mouse. I was using the plastic coated pad, and that
caused the cursor to freeze up and skip all over the screen. I changed
to the old style of mouse pad (cloth coated foam) and all of the cursor
problems went away forever.

Hope this helps. If not you, maybe some other confused people out there.

My son had the same thing happen to him with an optical mouse. When he got
his computer just over a yr. ago, he had no mouse pad at first;just using
it on desk surface. It was smooth, and the mouse did just what Mike's did.
I bought him a good mouse pad for Xmas and it just happened that it had a
roughened surface (didn't plan it that way) and soon as he started using
it, mouse worked perfectly. This xmas he brought his computer here while
he stayed over xmas (afraid his apt. might be burgled) and hooked it up to
my monitor. I have one of the plastic-coated mouse pads that Dell was
giving away in 2000. Sure enuf, problem returned with his mouse. So yes,
it might be the mouse pad that Jean is using, if he's using an optical
mouse.

thanks for replying--I'm using the *mousepad* that's on the laptop
console--and I've never had a separate mouse hooked up to this system. So,
there must be some glitch in the software--either in Me or OE.

The problem just happend to me again this morning, and I had to close OE and
restart the computer--I've found that this is the only way to *fix* the
problem--but like I said earlier, I'd like to fix it once and for all!

Since it's WinMe, have you tried (temporarily) disabling your anti-virus
software and see if that helps?

This was an issue with some of the older Win9X systems and AV/utility
programs.

I haven't tried that yet, and honestly I'm not comfortable doing that. I've
also noticed that my keyboard is acting funny too--I have to be careful when
typing, otherwise I type multiple repeated letters--this is more than simply
my inability to type well--it's definitely something wrong.
