somehow the default setting when i double click a file folder changed from
"open" to "search". in my efforts to solve the problem i created a shortcut
that does not work and i can't get rid of it because the "remove" option is
greyed out in the "edit file type" window. it is a great annoyance and i
would really appreciate some help.

by shortcut i mean the options listed when i right click a file folder such
as "explore" "open" etc... i created one that leads nowhere, named it "bill"
(don't ask) and now i can't get rid of it. as i said the "remove" button is
greyed in the "edit flie type" window.
(by the way regsvr32 /i shell32 did the trick in regards to the search
problem, thank you)

Ah, now I see. Wish I'd seen this earlier on. ) See my reply to your
next post. If you would have stated where you had added it, I could have
been more precise. And glad to hear the secondary note. Thanks for the
feedback.
