TECH: TOM Backbox Issue

Hi.

I purchased a TOM this weekend, and during the move, I had to remove
the legs. Part of the process to remove the legs included lifting the
playfield, and removing nuts that were on the inside cabinet. While I
was removing the nuts, I think I pulled out a connector that controls
the lights in my backbox.

Now, I none off the lights on the translight work. There is no
illumination whatsoever on the translight.

I tried to reconnect the connector, but I have no clue how to do it.
It is located at the front of the cabinet, directly below the plunger.
It seems as if it wants to fit, but nothing happens when I put it into
position. This isn't a normal looking connector. There is no
male/female dicotomy. It is simply a white square with some metal
blades on the side which don't appear to line up with anything.

Am I focusing on the right area?

No error message comes up on the menu, and when I try to run the test
for the lights, the translight simply does not light up. I checked the
bulbs, and they all appear to be in good shape (i.e the filament inside
is still connected)

Can someone offer me some insight to help me troubleshoot this problem?

That sounds like the jumpering plug that sets the voltage of the
transformer - the GI plugs would be in the backbox.

Open the backbox and look around the backbox for burned or disconnected
connectors.

the connector for the backbox GI goes in the J128 plug area. with the
orange and tan solid wires on the right side if your facing the
backbox.

I have the original manual for TOM. The manual says that backbox
information for Williams was the same. Is there a place online that I
can download the information regarding the backbox?

Thanks for the tips. As soon as I get home this afternoon, I will try
and put the tips to good use!

Thanks again!

Not sure what you are looking for but the Tom manual at Ipdb has the backbox
assembly on page 2-2

Well, I found my problem. The J120 molex connector has serious burn
damage on the last two connectors (on the right as you face the
backbox). I disconnected the molex connector, and I cleaned out the
burned area as best as I could. I then cleaned up the wires, and
carefully re-inserted them back into the molex connector.

Both the last two pins and the last two slots of the connector have
burn damage. The 2nd to last pin has minor burn damage. I was able
to scrape away most of the burn using a small exacto blade. The last
pin is totally black. I clean away most of the melted plastic, and I
connect the molex connector back into the board. I powered up the TOM,
and the translite lit up.

Now for the questions...

#1. Is there a risk of fire since I am using a damaged molex
connector? I had planned on going to Radio Shack, or finding someone
online, and replacing the molex connector. The earliest I will be able
to get to Radio Shack this week is Saturday morning. I plan on having
a pinball party on Saturday, and I was wondering if my current "fix"
will last through the party? Or is there a significant chance that I
will do more damage if I don't fix ASAP?

#2. Where can I find the pins that need to be replaced on the board?
Should I just look on bayareaamusements or maybe joepinball for the
part? Or can I pick up that part at Radio Shack as well? How quickly
do I need to replace it? Will it be okay through a pinball party?

Thanks again for all the advise!

Did you check the fuses? I don't think there's any GI connector in
the front.

Your not going to find molex connectors or pins at radio shack. Have
to order them from a pin site. they will have the gauge of pins and
connectors you need. Fairly simple repair. Just a pain in the ass
unplugging and labeling all the connectors so you can get the board out
to repair it.
