So, if it's not one thing here, it's another. Some Linux guru help me, please.
1. I'm running Mandrake 8.2 and as of now, KDE2. I've got a newsticker running in the lower right hand corner of the taskbar (system tray). I accidently sent my clipboard viewer and logout buttons to hell (gone), but I figured how to get those back. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to shut off the news ticker, though. I would much rather make an entire taskbar across the top of the desktop, and let the news ticker just have total free reign there, but at the very least, I'd like a way to shut it down so it's not just taking up precious space on the taskbar. I've checked the task manager, and I can't figure out what process it is, so I can't kill it like that. Please tell me how to kill this newsticker. It's the KNewsTicker v0.2.
2. How do I get windows (the Linux kind =) to dock down in the system tray? When I connect with my modem, and the wonderful throughput graph pops up, I'd like to just dock the thing down in the system tray, so when I'm done, I can just restore it and kill the connection. Or I can check it and friggin just marvel that there's 0.0kbs when I'm not doing anything, and Linux isn't phoning home to msft like XP doez. Docked with system tray == more space on the taskbar == good.
It's not like I can't live with it. It's just a little annoying. I'd like to have a taskbar on the bottom for all my desktop stuff, and the news ticker just running full time all the way across a thin strip at the very top of the desktop. If anyone knows how I can get the accomplished, I'd much like to hear from you.
1. a) right click on an "open space" of the task bar, go to Remove > Applet > KnewsTicker
b) right click on the little verticle "button" right next to the newsticker, go to Panel > Remove > Applet > KnewsTicker
2. what program are you using? kinternet??? kppp???
1. No can do. I've got an Add, Size, and preferences, etc. I've right clicked *everywhere*. If I right click my "display desktop" icon, I get a remove, but there's no sub menu to it. No menu comez up when I right click on the "little arrow" to the left of the ticker window.
2. I'm using kppp. Or pppd (ppp daemon?). A combo of the two?!?! What's the little stars next to the "owner" in the process manager signify? An open network connection?
And is it possible to make a second task bar? Like on on the bottom of the desktop, and one on the top? Verily, I'd love to have it running all the way across the top of the screen, although it might slow things down a little on this p2-266...

Hey! To cut to the chase on this one, is there just some config file I can edit and turn the thing off when KDE loads? Not remove it from existance, just remove it from loading at boot time?
1. take a look at my desktop, is this what you wanted??? to remove knewsticker, look carefully ate the top left corner of the submenu i opened up. if you right click on the button to the extreme right of the program, it opens up a submenu for knewsticker. but if you right click on the tiny black button right next to the other button, the menu to remove it should show. (in my picture it's the middle button of the three buttons shown, rember to right click on the black tiny arrow).
2. for kppp, there should be an option to dock into the panel. IIRC, its Setup > Misc then check "Dock into Panel on Connect"

yeah, you cannot have two simultaneous taskbar, so you have to remove the one on the bottom (like mine), then add a "child panel" on top by right clicking on an "open space" on your main panel and selecting Add > Extension > Child Panel
On the newly created panel, just right click on an "open space" and then Add > Applet > KNewsTicker

There probably is, but I don't mess with it because last time I did, I fuxxord everything up and had to reinstall all of KDE.
There's a group of two little lines to the right of each section. What it really boils down to is I didn't know how the taskbar functions; how it groups icons and processes.
I can get the taskbar up to the top, and add a child bar at the bottom, but not vice-versa. Oh well, at least it's a heck of a lot better than it was. I've got the news ticker on a child panel just above the taskbar, running the full width of the desktop. And yeah, it's causing lag even on mozilla as I type.
*whew*
/me just figured out what it means to get "slash-dotted"...
