I currently use WinVNC to administer servers remotely (over the LAN) and to connect to home systems from remote locations over the Internet. Are there any more efficient ways to do this? I have noticed that WinVNC is quite tasking on the CPU and bandwidth. Am I stuck, or is there light at the end of the tunnel?

threes also TIGHT which is just like vnc but a fair bit faster - now weather it uses less resources I dont know, but it may be worth a look (the viewer also connects to a "normal" VNC server)
Terminal serivces is totally different, though very handy for admining 2kserver - dont work on pro tho

If they squeeze olives to get olive oil, how do they get baby oil?
