Bad boot settings? Maybe something in the BIOS? Broken hard drive?

Is the hard drive in your laptop a SATA (Serial ATA) har drive? Windows XP does not natively support SATA drives. Your XP Home may have had the SATA drivers installed by the manufacturer. In the BIOS you should be able to change the setting to IDE from SATA, and access your harddrive if it appears. When you installed Windows XP Professional you should have pressed the F6 key and supplied the ACHI driver on a floppy drive.
