I found that my notebook DVD/CDRW works at PIO mode, and is dumb at "DMA if
available".
When I open CD at windows explorer, it popop out "I/O device error".
Does this mean mainboard or chipset defect?

Things to try, doing one thing at a time and testing after each change:
1. Swap out the ribbon cable for a known working one. Make sure cable
and power supply connections are snug.
2. Attach the drive to a different IDE connector on the motherboard.
3. Try the drive in a different computer.
4. Try a different, known-working drive in the original computer.
This will help you narrow down where the trouble lies.

Sorry, I missed that. The same information goes (test drive in another
laptop or connected to a desktop w/laptop-IDE adapter or test w/a
different laptop drive in your machine) if the cd drive is a removable
one. If not, contact the notebook mftr. for replacement since there is
a good chance the drive and/or the motherboard IDE connector has
failed.
