Laptop not connecting to 2nd display

My dv5 has what looks to be a vga port; however, it doesn't have those 2 screw holes to secure the wire. I tried plugging a vga wire into it from my desktop screen and I went through the screen settings, but nothing showed any signs of a 2nd monitor.
I also tried the hdmi connection into my TV, which didn't work either.
any ideas?
