Well I'm just putting the finishing touches on a reformat and reinstall on my notebook.
I had been planning on this for a few months now. Norton's been hanging the system on start up and now I'm rid of the evil system resource hog.

What you using instead of Norton, now you've banished the evil sh!t to the bin?

I tried Trend Micro P.C Cillin for a while it was reported by a Task Monitoring program to be using up to 50 MB of system resources.

I also do use the Norton System Works 2004 Pro edition but I have it installed as a custom install and I only use 2 parts of the whole application.

The Internet cookies cleaner and the Scan Registry option.

Prior to that when I first purchased......(YIKES)......that software I had the full install in including Norton Ghost.

The same Task Monitoring software reported the Full Norton System Works software as using up to 125 MB of system resources!! Yep 125 MB with Ghost booting with the system and resident in the systems tray as well as Default Anti Virus scanning and installed firewall.

Internet Explorer for example uses around 16 MB and that is considered to be allot of resources. In fact people looking to find a virus on their computer are advised to look for any software using more system resources (MB) then IE does.

Anyhow yes Norton always has had a severe bad habit of taking over full control of the computer it resides in. This makes the software almost useless to computer gurus who cherish computer resources like a blond dipped in warm chocolate. It has also severely affected Symantec in sales to the point of death in the public market.

Since Trend Micro only reports around 50 MB fully installed including Mail scan and antivirus and a really good programmable firewall including port rules for anything you can think of that Norton does NOT offer, it is by far the best package I have found to date. XP Pro Based.

Must admit that Norton is starting to get on my tits. My anti-virus hangs the system when it tries to do a full scan and Norton Personal Firewall will sometimes not display a site. Focking thing.

Might have a gander at both eTrust and Trend that you and SoD recommended. Cheers guys.

Well, I tried Grisoft's AVG free yesterday, had to go to my Dad's office and sort their machine out and I took the opportunity to install it. Despite my warning the guy who works for him to get it sorted, they were running a machine on the web with no AV, no firewall and no spyware detector. Spybot finds 143 items, 26 resident in memory and needing a reboot. PC was running sh!t slow and everything....

AVG found 9 viruses infecting 12 files. Auto-updates itself, easy to use (easier user interface than Norton). Might run with that for a while. Zone Alarm is gonna make a re-appearance on my machine too.

I haven't seen that one or heard of it...

I know about the trouble that's out there if your running barefooted... I'm running Zone Alarm & also the new MS Antispyware... So far the MS isn't finding squat.... I'm running Norton on top of that... Use Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Blaster once a week.... It's getting to take a couple of hours of maintenance a week just to keep things going...

I have no idea how a new guy, buying his first puter, survives.... :frown:

I don't either. My Dad's looking at getting a laptop and going on the 'net, but he's a complete noob so that's gonna be a nightmare.

I too run MS AntiSpyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Spyware Blaster. Very rare it finds anything these days, but then if you know what's what, then you can avoid all sorts of sh!t. That PC in the office had been on 3 sites, all legit and above board, but the amount of crap that had come down stealthily, man. Found an IP tracker in the root too. Bastards. For my Dad I think I'm gonna get a wireless router/firewall and ramp up the security big time.

Every PC I build now I install Spybot and Ad-Aware and tell them how to use it and what to look for. I don't want my phone to keep ringing.

I'm in the same boat as you!!!! Even then, they don't keep up with the updates & such...

I've got a nightmare going with my Mother in FL. She's got her ass handed to her, mostly with email.. They want to forward all these cute little jokes & then it's hammer time.

When she came home last spring, her laptop was locked solid... I had to do a clan install to get control of it again.. I ran the machine all summer, no problems...

I took her back down to Fl in Oct. She was locked solid again by Thanksgiving... What are you going to do??? My nephew works for a magazine reviewing hardware.. He came up with the idea of putting Linex on her machine. Linex is supposed to be immune.. So she sent it to him in NE.. Well Linex didn't like her modem & didn't like the extra one he had...

So he's loading up Firefox & that's about all we can do.. She says if it happens again, she's all done with computers.. Sad, really.. But we know of nothing to keep her going...

She thinks it's just like a TV, turn it on & change the channel, simple, really!!!

Oops.... Forgot.... Do you think it's better running behind a router??? I've got a brand new wireless router / switch, with 5 ports, sitting in the box... It not a g, it's the one before a g.. Would it be smarter to run that, even though I've only the one machine? It won't cost me a penny to change up...

The only reason I haven't ran that way yet, is because I use Roger Wilco to talk to people... I've heard that RW doesn't like a router, but I don't know that for sure....

Most of the time it's either emails or screensavers that fock the machine up. Look nice and pretty so they d/l 'em and hey presto, one world of hurt coming right up. Hell, I can just about stay on top of things, so imagine what it's like for the uninitiated. Like you say, they think it's like a TV. You've really got to keep your eye on the ball otherwise you get shafted good and proper.

Yeah, go with it. Don't matter if it's b because presumably your connection is right next to your machine. Extra security never hurt. Think PF and Jake are pretty up on routers and such, so they could give you some good pointers for tweaking the settings etc.

Try it, you never know, it might just work first off!

PF is the man on routers - I followed his lead ... I use a D-Link 624 wireless ... but just as a hardware firewall ... I don't have anything connected to it yet. It's pretty easy to follow the set-up wizard - the main thing being to turn off the "radio" so your neighbors aren't getting free internet. (Will get the privacy settings down before I "broadcast" - send any signals).

PF made me a great tutorial for my initial set-up ... maybe he can help you out RC ... I'm not that up on the advanced stuff ...

BTW Rob, I used AVG 7 Free (AV) for a while, but they are having problems with servers and updates ... so I've switched to Avast 4.5 (Free for home use) ... and it seems good so far.

There is a good thread in the XP forum on AV's for XP ...

i personally use ventrillo which is the basically the same as RW, and i have to set it up as a virtual server for ventrillo

Well my re and re has made a huge impact on performance.
I got rid of alot of software I wasn't using. And dumping Norton was the best thing I have ever done.

I still miss my desktop 3.2 P4. I really liked the hyperthreading, the DVD RW drive, the 1 Gig of RAM and the 240G of hard drive space. I sold it when I moved into my new house. Now I use my old notebook. A PIII 1.13 with 512MB RAM and a 20G hard drive with a combo CD-RW DVD drive.
I figure about 4 to 6 months after MS releases Longhorn (I think that's the name for the next version of Windows) I'm going to buy a new high end notebook system. It's gonna be a hard wait.

Does anyone know when the next version of Windows is coming out? Last I heard it was fall of 2005. But I figure it won't be until spring of 2006.

I have been running AV next to Trend Micro in the systems tray for the last 2 weeks a trial.

Absolutely no conflicts never one and the system is rock solid stable.

I have been manually updating both programs daily and in fact gaming with no problems from either application or slow down in multiplayer.

I enjoy knowing the extra protection is there.....

About the only thing a router is good for on a nigh speed connection is...You can configure it to block ICMP requests preventing an outside person from Pinging your computer.

This is handy for gamers that pick up hackers online that take it personally when you shoot their unskilled asses to many times.

Much of the abuse on a game players computers are from snivelling little game losers that set-up a second P.C on a spoofed MAC address and run DDOS attacks or packet flushing attacks called Brute Force against another players IP number, in effect drownning your connection.

Since the second P.C they are running the attack from is not their primary P.C they can have that Brute Force attack run for days in some cases weeks on end.

Using a router with ICMP blocks in place will stop that kind of brute force attack way out on the internet through the routers external IP number such as 192.168.1.1 for a LINKSYS router for example.

Preventing in total any hostile third party from hammering your connection to shreds out of spite!!

Just a quick update...Avast found 3 virii that norton had let slip through...I was watching as Jake showed you the Avast link and thought I'd give it a try. After a restart Avast did a complete scan before I got to my password page and found those pesky trojans.

Avast is currently on a weeks trial. It's already got one up on Norton in that it actually completes a scan of my machine without hanging the damn thing. AVG next up.
