Definately Underrated... Maverick!

Just finished a Maverick and this is the first one I fully shopped and
actually took time to learn the ruleset. I think this is an often
overlooked game, especially in this age of super expensive DMD games.

I would think this game may be a good choice for EM collectors to get
into DMD's. With 17 drop targets, this game rivals some of the best
wedgeheads for sheer quantity of targets. With most WPC games, you're
extremely lucky if you get 3 or 4 drop targets. Most WPC games have
none or are poorly executed like BSD and ST:TNG.

I don't like the themed artwork on the game at all and the paddle wheel
does slow the play down a bit, but those are the only drawbacks to the
game. Sometimes the boat optics can be problematic, but the problems
are documented and easily remedied.

The poker-hand ruleset is absolutely fabulous and well exectuted on
this game. I wish they had come up with software to better take
advantage of all the drops, like maybe a 1 minute hurry-up mode to drop
all of the cards. Video blackjack is always a hit too! Ugh! For me,
that darn captive ball is nearly impossible to hit. Nice skill shot
arrangement (just like Hook) and a cool shooter handle.

Go buy one today... CHEAP!

Maverick has pulled my attention from Jokerz for a while!

Agreed. One of, if not the best modern era card theme pin. Like drop
targets? Like card themes? Gotta love the Mav :)

I'll second that! We picked one up 'cause it was a deal and we all
really enjoy it.
Pretty much the same thoughts you had on the +/-'s

Are there ANY drop target DMDs before OR after Maverick?

On the Mav', drop targets are nice, but only as far as hitting them
starts Lauren Bell mode ;-)

Stern's High Roller Casino has a bank of Drop Targets and its a
gambling theme (if I remember correctly the Drop Targets are for CARDS
- A, K, Q, J, 10).

Stern's TSPP also has a 3-bank Drop Target for Iggy & Scratchy.

Yep! Great Game!

I have one in beautiful condition that I'm looking to sell as I'm
trying to make room for a CFTBL.

Asking $1250 recently shopped and 100% working.

Located in Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Shoot me an email if interested to:

Cheers,

Arghh... forgive if this is a repost.

The game just "feels" slow. The music is lazy and slow, the DMD
animations are slow, the sound bites are all laid back. There's no
rush whatsoever playing this game.

Movie was dull and there's far too many references to it.

Priced right, IMO.

Stargate has 8 I believe--one bank of 3, one bank of 2, one blocking
the right alley shot, and two 'reverse' drop shots (aka the targets go
up instead of down, revealing another tunnel).

Yes. Indiana Jones got 4. Guns N' Roses got 6, judge Dredd got 5. There are
numerous games with only 1 (STTNG, Fish Tales, etc...) The Shadow has a
whole bank of Battlefield as drop downs, 1 drop down before the vertical
upkick ramp to get there, and of course the "wall" to lock the balls for
multiball.

Those sort of games had been very popular in France, and some distributors
over there really wanted a card game. So Gary and Joe got us the license.

Thank you. This was the first game where I was really involved in
creating rules start to finish, working closely with Lonnie, Lyman, Joe,
and others. There was some definite risk-taking there, especially in
beating the hand shown on the playfield rather than just matching it. I
fought for that hard, not sure if the "victory" helped the game or not.
It was poker. We did make sure that the cards worked out between the
drops and the playfield - important that none were duplicated. I remember
one design meeting in Joe's office where I used a deck of cards to
illustrate it.

The original playfield was a wide body, first placed on test with "shill"
software on a 128 x 32 DMD. As I recall the game wasn't very ready for
test - among other things just about anything you shot made the sound call
"Multiball Ready." The boat drop targets had a hole behind them instead
of a captive ball - the design concept was "Ace (of Spades) in the hole."
The paddlewheel was about twice the width of the production model, it
looked really nice. James Garner wasn't at the poker table in that
artwork. To my knowledge only two wide-body playfields were produced, one
for the whitewood and one screened, which went into the test game. I
saved the screened one from the trash, Kerry Stair has it now.

Some were surprised when we came to the show with a narrow-body game with
the 192 x 64 DMD. It was an interesting game to work on because Lyman was
very busy doing the new display system and we had a somewhat raw team of
dot artists - Jack Liddon and Kurt Andersen were otherwise occupied with
Tattoo Assassins. The game didn't sell well in France - the crash was
already on its way for DE/Sega, and there was a lot of wariness about the
big display - it didn't change the world.

I've got one STUFFED in my garage. :) Now that I've moved Old Chicago,
Wiggler, and Big Day to the other side of the garage, I can actually see
the top and sides of the Maverick backbox.

And if Bill Davis ever gets going that wide body maverick playfield will be
used with a widebody cabinet to resurrect the only wide body Maverick . . .
Long term project to be sure ;-)
