with the approaching A64 v Prescott, opteron v Xeon, nv35,38,40 v R350,360,400 wars and the introduction of pci express and proliferation of SATA, being driven by Doom 3 and Half life 2 and (according to inquireer) increased demand because of no support for win9x soon hence upgrades.
All this means things should really progress quickly in the near future, looks like early 2004 will be a great time to upgrade
That plus 2005. So much to chose from. Not enough money to buy.
I'm looking forward to my next big upgrade... should be middle of 2004 or so I reckon. Hopefully there'll be some good tech out by then.
BTW, anyone know what the scheduled release dates are for the next round of GPU cores? [nvidia/ATI] I'm too lazy to check...

With you there - I'm not 'upgrading' until I have to. Hell, I only upgraded from Win95 because Nvidia's Detonator drivers stopped supporting it. There was a very noticeable speed decrease after that 'upgrade' [on a K6-II 350 system)

Yes! The only problem about exciting times is that you don't have all the money you wish you had...
But early 2004 will indeed be great for upgrading.

Let's see: 1. New Intel and AMD technologies - 90nm's, etc. 2. PCI Express, 3. DDRII memory, 4. Increased competition between M$ new OS (Longhorn) and the ever improving Linux (ver. 2.6.+) OS, - might be a nice time to buy some new parts ...

You upgrading the end of this year or early 2004?
yeah i forgot about ddr2, but will it give much of a speed increase, i always thought it was initially going to be 533mhz and dual channel, but we have dual channel and over 400mhz already so maybe it wont be so great until the speed ramps up a bit
longhorn....another bloated slow operating system...cant wait...

actually, HB, I don't really know... I wanted to upgrade this year, but I might wait until things settle down a bit. You know, to get a better picture of what A64 and prescott will be about. Heck, I might even wait for Grantsdale, I don't know. I'm not rich, anyway, and right now, I'm fine with my P3 550Mhz and my other P3 933Mhz. I might go for a 3+Ghz processor by 2004, then... Even my P3 933 is much more than two years old... But it's got a GF4 Ti4200, so it's perfectly OK for now and I don't really need any upgrade now.
I guess we should always get the computers we want when we need them... or else we'll burn up a lot of money...

totally agree with them...
i am surprised that windows is again switching file systems...pain in my a$$...hope they still keep fat32 support...i really think if people do not like the looks of windows they should seriously consider a linux based os...
So easy to fry yet tastes so good...
Silicon: The other, other, other white meat
also if i see no performance or useability gain...i am not switching from windows 2000pro...xp failed to deliver this by being bloated and annoying and offering slower performance...it also had worse security...again why should i upgrade, because M$ tells me to?

Keep meaning to do something with Linux...
Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question, but Most new linux GUIS include some form of windows emulation don't they? Just how good is said emulation? If I could run Linux but still run whatever software I liked in a 'Windows Window', even if only @ 75% speed or so, then I'd very seriously consider making the switch - mostly because I'm a cheapskate though, and don't want to shell out £150 or whatever it is for XP/Longhorn/Next POS OS they produce...

If you have a fast machine you wont notice the diff between xp and 2000(altough xp still gonna use lots of ressources). I must say i like Xp for all the multimedia but other than that it really failed to improve win2k. Anyone tried networkin with xp pro?It sux, win2k is so much better in that regard. I do think that longhorn will be an improvement. Its not some sort of user-friendly addon like XP was.
they do make a emulator for windows programs...i beleive it is called "wine" you could google it to be sure...

Actually, there are several emulation projects to run Windows software under Linux. So far they all pretty much work for office software only. (Which is kind of pointless since you could just run native Linux software that's compatible with the M$ file formats.) And so far they also bloat performance even worse than just running Windows in the first place.
The best 'emulation' project that I've seen was actually to emulate PC hardware instead of Windows API. Then you load a copy of Windows onto the emulated hardware. This way you can run Linux and Windows at the exact same time. Of course it still requires a Windows license and does nothing for helping performance under Windows. **ROFL** I guess the point is that it's handy for Windows/Linux software developers? Beats me. I forgot who wrote that software though... I know they also go the other way too, so that you can load Linux onto an emulated PC from Windows.

I know I'm gonna catch flak for this, but here goes anyway. I have an old Athlon 700 system, and after a decent bit of tweaking -- disabling numerous services, uninstalling unecessary bits, registry tweaks -- XP actually runs faster on my box than 98 did, and it is infinitely more stable. Granted it took massive amounts of tweaking to get it there, but it was well worth it IMO.

yes i phrased that wrong...an emulator that i know of off the top of my head is...
The point for most to go to linux is not speed...for most it is experimentation, more customisable gui and os, free.... i don't think many go for speed...but it is not a slow operating system

why not just get 2k...less tweaking more performance out of the box...IMO 2k matches 98se's speed...
I have a pIII 700 that i ran xp pro on for a while...i did a fare amount of tweaking...after a while i just said to myself...why am i doing all this...then i got 2k and am very happy with it...i havn't need to do much tweaking to get desireable results...
Good for you for getting xp fast...but i am willing to bet that you are pretty much left with 2k pro now...

I tried 2k before, and was unable to get some of my older games to work on it. Other than that it seemed OK. Games have never been a problem with XP -- the compatibility mode feature comes in handy every now and then. Other than that, it looks and runs pretty much like 2k now. I have all of the useless, memory-eating features of XP disabled.

i have yet too find a game that a patch tweak or update would not get it to work on 2k...i have even gotten a game (need for speed porsche unleashed) that specifically said it would not work on 2k to work on 2k!

Silicon: The other, other, other white meat
Yes, that was one of the games I had problems with. I did finally get it to work. I forget the name of it, but there was a site that dealt specifically with getting 9x-based stuff to work on NT-based stuff that I had to visit quite often. I just got tired of searching for patches/tweaks for all of my games, and even still they seemed to suffer performance-wise. On an Athlon 700, even minor performance drops can be quite noticable. XP was meant to be the merging of the capabilities of the archaic MSDOS-based 9x OS's with the stability of NT-based OS's. In my case, it turned out to be the best solution.

So your saying Longhorn will be just like XP?
You said it about burning up money. I needed the upgrade so I went for it this year. Next upgrade will be maybe the end of next year. But I'll see whats up by then an will likely wait for 1st half of 2005.
like xp from the standpoint that it will probably have many short commings and offer no/less performance or functionality increase to the average power user....

So it looks like we save money and stay with 2000 Pro. To bad Micro$
actually 2k pro is just as expensive as xp pro...dunno how much longhorn will cost but i bet it will be one bitch to pirate...
