I currently have a P4 1.7 gigahertz and according to what I've been told, my motherboard will support up to a 2.0 P4. Would this difference be noticeable, particularly in handling heavy graphics loads? I have a 128 meg ATI All in Wonder 9700 pro graphics card.
Appreciate any input.

i think your motherboard could support cpus over 2g, by upgrading bios. wait for some time to get a cheaper price.

What motherboard is it? What do you actually do with the computer? and no, you probably wouldn't notice much difference, but your mobo may well support faster processors anyway.

No...

Don't know the mobo model #, but it's an Intel "Monteray" or something using a 423 pin 1.7 ghz cpu with an Intel 850 chipset.

Sounds to me like you're pretty screwed then for upgrade options. Besides, the 300MHz wouldn't really give you all that much more performance.

Another option though might be adding more RAM. How much do you have and what exactly do you do that you need more power for?

Agrees with slvr_phoenix:

If for example you are doing fairly graphics intensive stuff (games maybe  ) your present graphics card/processor should be just great:

I just upgraded to 1 gig RAM, so I guess I'm pretty much topped out for this system.
Thanks for the input.

time to overclock

Did powerleap make a 423 to 470 converter?

3 386DX-25's...12 volts...glue some ln2 and a wicked amount of overclocking and you get a willamantee minus 36 pins, 33.75 million transistors and a couple hundred mhz...

oh btw...you have only intel to thank for not having other cpu options...they did it to the celerons...they did it to the copermines...and they did it to the tualatins...

Yes they did, but thats all that I know!! Anyway, the problem still sexists that his motherboard only officially supports 100FSB and its doubtful whether the i850 chipset can be overclocked to 133FSB. Nonetheless he could still get a 2.4Ghz 100FSB using the convertor.

ewww 400mhz fsb on an intel cpu... I don't even think a 400mhz bus p4 2.4 will make a diffrence either...p4s luv bus speed...

As Tombance said, with an adapter, you could use a 2.4 gig proc. This would be > 1/3 speed gain. With all the money you have tied up in ram, the adapter and 2.4 is your only upgrade option. My experience is that this would be a clearly noticable improvement.

it is not worth it...that cpu cannot reach its full potential cause it just has to slow of a bus...
