im about to buy a gericom notebook from europe. im in the states. do u think it's a good idea. im buying it mainly because its a good price for the hardware. p4-m 2.2, dvd-r, ati mobility 9600, for around $2000. do u think its risky buying from europe from a new vendor should i wait for a similiar config. in the states. thanks

Buy something with a brand name. Unlike a desktop, every notebook is different, you cannot fix them yourself because the parts are not widely available. This is why I highly recommend getting a 3 year wanteree.

Again, I've done this with the KDS brand ... and I wouldn't do it with them again. And, if these guys are new with no track record, I would agree with Howard on it.

BUT, if you know them... if you have seen them or if you see a lot of good reviews (from users!) and they are positive, you might consider. If blindly, I wouldn't -- go with something known. (ok, yes, i might have made a mistake with the other one .. we'll have to wait and see!)

no idea who they r just that they r an austrian company, havent read any reviews from users either. they were mentioned on the ATI site. im basically buying it for the video card, and good features-price. and plus the fact that the companies here (dell, hp) r introducing the cards in wide-aspect screens which i dont like.

Wait it out, man. Something better will come along. Buying in Europe is also more expensive than buying in the states (i.e. if you bought the same thing in the states (which I know you can't), it would theoretically be cheaper).

I sefinitely agree with the others,
don't worry, something better will come.

You could wait a million years and things will all always go that way. Just look and get one NOW, rather than wait, cuz you'd always be waiting. This is the thing with computer purchases, you CAN'T regret. CPU's will ALWAYS get faster, harddrives will ALWAYS get larger, memories will ALWAYS get larger, prices will ALWAYS stay in a certain range. (rougly $1000-$3000)

I disagree. You most certainly CAN regret a computer purchase. I have always waited for the "perfect" deal to come around - one that suits me, has (sometimes more or less) everything that I need. I have done this for all my purchases, and so far I have not regretted. I know many, many people who have though, ESPECIALLY with notebooks.

My opinion still remains, I would not jump in and buy the notebook now, rather wait and see what else happens. If nothing else appears, then go for the Gericom, but what do you lose by waiting?

thanks for the opinions. i was on the verge of buying a dell 8500 with the nvidia 4200 card back in march. then suddenly all these new technologies (ati 9600, nvidia, centrino etc) came out. i've been waiting since then for ati cards but no word on them coming to the states.
the only problem is the support for the laptop. they dont have a presence here and even in europe i have no knowledge of their reputation.

from what i have heard on the 9600, it might start showing up in some models within the next month ... and then in more models in the next 2 months. so, not that really helps but maybe expect seeing within that time frame??

What I'm trying to say is that technology is always improving, when the "perfect" notebook comes along, there will be other ones that you want. It is never a bad idea to wait, but there is always better stuff on the horizon.
