Can anyone tell me if it is safe to download ACTIVE X ?
my internet Explorer bar keeps warning me not to unless I
am absolutely sure.

Sometimes it is. Once and a while it's not. Let the web site owner's
reputation be your guide. Your system should be displaying a digital
signature/certification dialog before installing a new ActiveX control.

Be VERY carefull about links in emails, forums and news group articles.
Some links will display impersonator sites that will install malicious
controls or ask you to submit personal information for identity theft
purposes. Impersonations of banks and online auction sites have already
become a problem. The alarm bells should be particularly loud if an
email asks you to verify a purchase or an account number AND provides a
"convenient" link to a web page. It's much safer to type the domain name
in the browser address bar and use the site's indexes and links to find
the page. Links in a reputable search site's results should be safe too.

I feel safer using an alternate browser that doesn't even have ActiveX
capability. I don't have to click the refusal button in the ActiveX
permision dialog near as often.
