Hi, I was thinking about upgrading my HP 8650C's 533mhz Celeron with a 1.4ghz Celeron. I heard that to do this you need a FCPGA2 to FCPGA converter or something? Is it true? if it is, what can I upgrade my processor to without needing the converter? thanks

Best I can do is to lead you to some info.

The converter. Note also check for compatibility on your Mobo.

What chipset is your mobo?

Yes as flinx has stated you do indead need a converter...you may also need pc100 memory if you are currently using pc66

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP

I would guess his is Intel 810 or 810E (if there is a significant difference)
seems like 810 for Canada/U.S. and maybe 810E elsewhere?

that chipset supports up to a 133mhz bus...so you should be fine with a tualatin celery (w/ adapter)...make sure you have pc100 ran though...

If you are not sure...open up the case and remove one of the dimm modules...look at the writing on 1 of the memory chips chips...if you see a -10 or -9 or -8 somewhere writen on the chips there is a good chance you have pc100 ram if you see an -15 then chances are you have pc66 :frown:

I'm pretty sure my chipset is a 810, not the 810E. I'm positive I have pc100 rams. Is there a processor i can upgrade this to without needing a converter? how about a p3 850mhz? i think 810 chipset supports only upto 100hmz fsb

Hard to say for certain, unless you have evidence of someone else doing it. I have a Gateway Flex ATX system here with an MSI board that simply REFUSES to run a Tualatin Celeron 1100 on an adapter, even though it was factory equiped with a PIII 933! I believe it's a BIOS problem.

yes you could upgrade up to an 850...if you have pc100 memory you could use any coppermine core 100mhz bus cpu... Make sure it is not slot 1...

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP

yes as long as it is a socket 370 cpu (not slot 1) you can install it without any adapter...

yes...

any processor over 1ghz you will need an adapter for...with exception to the celeron 1.0ghz that needs an adapter...

Isn't there a 1GHz Coppermine with a 100MHzFSB? I'd think that the 133MHz FSB 1GHz Coppermine would work too, but then PC133 would probably be suggested as well... And didn't Intel release a good 1.13GHz Coppermine later to replace their buggy one? Probably darn hard to find if they did, but in theory it should run on the mobo, no?

Or maybe I just drank too much coffee. **shrug**

Lot cheaper to put in a top end Celeron and faster too, I think. Also the overclock, if possible, would be ideal.

hmmm...they may have re-released a newer stepping of the 1.13 possibly called the 1.13A? Hmm...i dunno my memory is a bit vague..

there was a coppermine 1.0E...however good luck finding it...i dunno who in the right mind would buy it...possibly only someone with a 440bx board who was scared to clock it to 133mhz fsb?

Yes a 1.13 should work on that mobo...but the 1.13ghz tualatin would be a better buy for the $$...

Don't forget there WAS a Coppermine Celeron 1.0GHz and even a 1.1GHz version. These were around before the Tualatin and are now very hard to find new!

Therefore the easiest way to tell is the amount of cache, the 128k versions at those speeds were Coppermine, the 256k versions were Tualatin.

most relators mark their tualatin celeries the 1.0A although i have never seen a 1.1A processor...
