Just inspected a TOM - one or two issues.. your advice ple..

I am looking at a TOM that is in pretty nice shape apart from a few issues -
how big a deal are these?

1) On a couple of the Illusions inserts (ie. strait jacket, hat magic etc)
just above the flippers, some of the playfield is cracked around the inserts
which dirt has obviously got into, highlighting the problem. What is the
best fix for this? (clean and superglue) Or is clearing the only solution?
Should this "wear" worry me? Should the inserts be glued back in from
underneath to prevent more movement?

2) Near the trunk, on the RHS (as you look at it from a players perspective)
the post is missing. It appears that the mounting might of been damaged
under the PF and someone has hacked the top of the PF with a small T-nut.
Should this area normally have this t-nut there? how is the post normally
held in place? What is the best method of repair?

3) A little further back from "number 2", an incorrect screw has obviously
been put in from the underside and punctured the pf - it is very small and
only very very slightly raised/split the pf around the puncture hole (total
damage area is approx 3mm (3/32"?).. The area is quite small and hidden by
the left ramps left target switch - is this going to be much of a drama to
repair? what is the best method?

thanks for all and any help.

I had really bad cracks like that on the playfield of my bsd. If it is
a game you think you might want to keep for along time, those cracks
willl really get to you. I swapped my playfield out I hated them so
much.

The T nut by the trunk is suppose to be there. it's the way the game
is made. As far as the screw comming through the playfield. I usually
take the screw out. Then use a flat or slightly rounded punch to
reflaten the wood to a smooth surface. Then fill/touch up any art that
may have been damaged. As far as cracked inserts go. It maybe hard to
find for this game due to the fact that the entire playfield is
screened over the insterts. I guess it depends on severity. You could
clean out the dirt as much as possible then seal the crack with
superglue. so more dirt doesnt' get in there.

whatever you do, keep super glue away from inserts.
it melts into the plastic.

The T nut is supposed to be there. That area is nearly always damaged on
ToM's. I've had to use epoxy to build up damage, sand and paint to
match. Fortunately the swirly clouds there are basic solid colors. Neo
has the rght idea :)

For the inserts I've always filled them with super glue. Here's a tip
though; always paint any black first and then wick the CA around the
inserts. The glue dries clear and you won't have to repaint the insert
borders this way. As far as I know CA has no solvents so it shouldn't
attack plastic. Never has for me anyway. There may be some so called
"hot" CA's and those may have solvents so stay away from those.

Why the hell is there a t nut there? I just yesterday replaced this with a
post because I shot a ball up there the same time it was turning and the
ball ended up wedged up there tight. I thought I screwed it up because the
trunk wouldn't spin the other way or anything. I had to remove the ball and
move the trunk in the tests a couple times before it started to function
normally again. So in when a post, just like the other 3 corners.
Hopefully this won't screw things up more.

If it's just the borders of the inserts that can be touched up and cleared
over, but if it's in the artwork it's a problem. The paint over the inserts
there is thin over large plastic areas and there is a danger in doing more
damage while trying to clean out those cracks. Very difficult to touch up
and if they're cracked through the paint to the plastic, they will show
through when illuminated, if cleared. Hard to touch up and be unnoticed too
and hard to not see as it's right in front of you. However, if they're not
cleared there's a big risk that the wear will continue to worsen, especially
as you try to keep them clean.

Thanks guys.. Excellent posts/responses.. Plus they've made me feel a
little better about it all..

Just to follow up, the inserts "cracks" are very very fine.. as can be seen
in this picture:

Those are very fine indeed. So fine I wouldn't bother with trying to
match colors, just fill with CA and be done. Don't forget to get the
playfield absolutely level before filling!

That's the beginning of insert wear, I wouldn't bother trying to correct it
but if it were me, that pf would be cleared to prevent further wear.
