I see that some places are selling refurbished CPU's. Although the price is lower, I'm a little bit leery, ie not sure of warranty, etc. Any thoughts?
Thanks

refurbed cpus are sold as oem products...so you get about 30 days at best...it depends on the vendor...call em up and ask...

They are probably just already opened products that were returned but are in perfect working condition...

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP

I'd say that you're right. They're probably the bottom of the barrel as far as quality goes though. (Such as surface scratches, bad OCers, hot runners, and such.) I'd only suggest going with them if you're going to run it at stock speed. Personally I stick with retail.

But anywho even if it doesn't come with the basic OEM coverage or something similar(which it should) it should still be covered under standard lemon laws for at least a couple of days. So if it doesn't work at all you should be safe, though usually that's a lot harder to get enforced than an actual warranty.

I will buy many things refurbished, but a processor is one that I am really hesitant about. You never know how it was treated (overclocked, scratched up, etc.) by the previous owner and problems might not show up immediately. By the time they do, it'll be too late. I'll buy motherboards, CD-RW drives, Graphics cards and things like that without thinking twice, but CPUs, memory and Hard Drives I just can't seem to trust.

I'm confused. You don't think that people aren't doing that to their video cards?

Sure, but how many people do it to their CPUs versus how many people do it to their video cards. 4:1? 5:1? I have known how to overclock a CPU for years. I overclocked a GPU for the first time two weeks ago. Also, it seems that people overclock the inexpensive to mid-range CPUs to get higher performance (Hardcore OCers). People seem to overclock the high-end video cards for FPS and bragging rights. I guess I should re-qualify my remarks, that I (meaning me) would not buy a CPU, HDD or memory that is refurbished, because the ones I am going to buy are going to be in that mid-range level. My video cards are not the ones that overclockers use, it'll be a couple of years before I pick up a 9800 Pro, so I feel fairly safe.
