I want a simple laptop for surfing/networking and can choose between pIII 500 or celly 700 laptops for the same price (celly 700 does have docking station included however)...would the pIII be noticeably quicker running apps or would the extra 200mhz in the celly make up for it?

I'd go with the p3 from what iv'e heard. i think l2 cache is the important bit here. Not real familiar with intel but doesn't celeron have half the cache of the p3. ANd also people will laugh at you if u have a cleron.

If he doesn't die, he'll get help!!!
Edited by RRAMJET on 08/10/03 02:38 PM.

Thanks...yeah - after I posted mine I went thru some of the posts in the big thread below and I realized I'd become the scum of the earth if I went with the celly :)...

Actually the performance of the two will be almost identical...i would however just go for the pIII...i dunno i just think if i had the choice....i would take a pIII over any celeron (except a tualatin celery  )

I have a pII 400...and it is a great cpu...the piii 500 is a better cpu...it should do just fine for word...the cpu will gladly run windows 2000...

Bus speed an cache are what the celery has been crippled by...

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP

don't pay attention to the sisoft benchmarks...they have no bearing on realworld performance...the other ones on that site have a much bigger performance impact...i am not a big fan of sisoft's benchies...

Yeah, go the 500.
Better bus speed, better cache... and becauze it runs slower it probably consumes less juice, so you might get more lifetime out of the battery.
(Though the difference is probably minimal in day to day usage)

Well looking at the benchmarks which follow like
sysmark, winrar,PC mark, etc. I'd still say the celeron is
slightly ahead most of the time.

they do not have a celeron 700 in that test...at least i am not seeing it...so it is hard to judge...i would just say go for the pIII...i am pIII man not celeron man...

i would have to say that the celeron uses a tiny bit less juice...it has half the cache and is running slower memory...
