Hi I have just networked my pc's together via crossover cable. I can share my broadband between both machines but cant share files and on the client it says that I dont have user permissions to view the workgroup, or the main server, however I am set as an administrator and cant figure out how to set user permissions so that me and my boyfriend can view eachthers machines. Any idea whats going on, I can access some files but not everythng.
You can right click on My Computer and go to Manage. Find the users folder, and add a new user. make the username and password the same as he uses on his machine. Usually his pass will be blank. change the check boxes for password expires and stuff, and then he should be able to access files on your XP machine.
Or on his 98/me machine, you can Start->logoff and change the username to the same as you use on the XP machine.
I had the same problem, though with a network connected over a switch. Go to any open window, go to Tools->Folder Options->View, and then scroll down to the bottom and select "Use simple file sharing". Unless you are a real computer network adminstrator, I recommend using this for all your network sharing needs.
make sure that you have the quest account enabled too. I had that same problem, and as soon as I enabled the guest account, it worked. I also had the simple file sharing enable. That takes it right back to the good 'ol 2000 look that everyone loves. If you disable simple file sharing, and it still doesn't work. Try the guest account. Worked for me. Good luck
