DirectX Problems

My DirectX doesn't work anymore. Therefore, games such as
Dungeon Siege don't work.
What happens is that when DirectX is in use, the screen
blinks black for a second or two, and then the program
crashes and returns to desktop. I am positive it is
DirectX, because I first noticed it when the dxdiag program
stopped working when I was testing DirectX. I have gone
through the whole dxdiag without any success. There are no
reported driver conflicts, but just to make sure, I
installed the latest AGP drivers for my motherboard, and
also I installed the latest drivers for my graphics card
(which is a GeForce 2 MX/MX400). I have also tried
reinstalling the latest version of DirectX (9.0c), but to
no avail.
Has anyone had this and/or does anyone know how to fix it?

There's no standard way to uninstall DirectX, but there are some
utilities, like at http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html. Note: I
haven't tested it myself. You can then try to reinstall it.

However, DX programs failing can also indicate hardware problems, so
if reinstalling DX doesn't help, you can try to: underclock your card
(google "overclock nvidia"; perhaps current drivers have this already
-- I have an ATI card, so don't know), reduce AGP speed in the BIOS,
disable "fast write". Try a different graphics card if you can.
