Before I get flamed and told this is OT, and to go to the Palm
Pilot/handhelds groups and to the Palm web site support: I've been
there and done that, This is my last resort.
I've been trying to get a new Palm Pilot m130 with USB cradle to
Hotsync with a Dell Inspiration I8200 laptop model PP01X. The Palm
Desktop software is installed, the Hotsync is configured for USB, the
handheld unit is configured to transfer data from the cradle to the
PC. When I try to Hotsync, I get a message that connect could not be
established between the handheld and the PC. OK, so I check the USB
ports on the laptop by plugging in other peripherals, and they all
work. I uninstall the USB port drivers, and let Windows XP reinstall
them on the next boot, and try again, the USB ports work with other
peripherals, but don't detect that anything has been plugged into them
when I plug in the USB cable from the Palm Pilot m130 Cradle. OK, so
I uninstall the Palm Desktop software, and remove any keys and strings
from the Registry relating to Palm. Then I download and install the
latest version of the Palm Desktop software from the Palm website,
because its supposedly more Windows XP friendly. No change. When the
USB cable is plugged in, there isn't any action. Then to make sure
that the hardware itself doesn't have any problems: I installed the
Palm Desktop software to my desktop Dell Dimension 2400, and the
moment I plugged the USB cable into my desktop system, it was
recognized, and the Hotsync began. So, it isn't a hardware problem,
and it isn't a problem with the Palm Desktop software. I'm thinking
that the laptop may have a component (no other USB devices are plugged
in), or driver that's proprietary to that Dell Inspiration model,
which conflicts with allowing the Windows XP to recognize that a Palm
Pilot m130 has been plugged into a USB port. Is my conclusion
logical? Does anyone have any other idea what the problem might be?

is this windows xp system a singe user system? does it have additional
logons that happen to also have palm desktop installed? does the user that
you are logged in as have administrator rights? it must be installed when
logged in to xp as the user you intend to use it with but that logon must
have administrator rights to install (then they can be put back to whatever
level you desire). but all that aside, palm/dell does have a problem with
their optiplex gx150 usb ports, in that case they suggest using a palm m130
serial cable or cradle. but i don't think that you model has a serial
port... but you pc does have a infrared port, and every palm has an infrared
port... so you can hotsync wirelessly using your infrared port... slow the
first time out (large amount of data), but really nice afterwards (small
amounts of data).
