Diablo 2 lord of destruction on windows 7

Hello,
I've installed Diablo 2 on my new laptop (Windows 7 home premium) which works fine but when I try to install the Lord of Destruction expansion it says that i haven't installed the diablo 2 game! i haven't downloaded the latest patch though.

If you register your game code on Blizzard battle.net, you have the possibility to download the game downloader for the game including the expansion (if you bought this too) and I think this is a good method if all else fails, it actually managed me to play Diablo 2 expansion on my Linux system at home and it works great! So maybe that works for Windows 7 too?
