ive been looking int buying the pulsewave 2 headset, all the reviews Ive seen about it are awesome and people say the quality is great. But I really dont understand the concept of virtual 7.1 surround sound. People say it really works but I still dont understand it, its a 2.1 headset. Does the vibrations feature have anything to do with it?

Im getting it anyway, but I just want to understand a little better the concept of virtual 7.1 surround sound

thx

as the sound travels around your head in a horizontal pattern, the location will have a unique sound to it.
an easy example is to listen to somebody talking in front of you, and then again with the person behind you.
those locations can be split into 7 different sections, and then blended together.
of course, you dont have to stop at 7 different locations.
you could chop up the 360 degrees into 360 locations, or 500 locations if you wanted to make each spot smaller.

the sound processor simply adds a sound effect to the audio to recreate front or side or behind.

kinda like saying, for each location (front/side/behind) it is like each one of those locations has its own 'sound preset'
you have probably seen sound presets before.
things like 'environments' with the realtek soundcards.
or
eax settings with the creative soundcards.

the realtek soundcard has quite a few different environments.
you can choose a sewer or a bathroom or a living room or auditorium or concert hall or cave .. etc.

so if the soundcard sends the right channel.. that channel always gets 'cave' environment (only an example)
and if the rear channel has audio, the sounds from the rear channel always get 'concert hall' applied to it.
yes, you only have left and right speakers.. but each individual surround channel gets sent to a mixer (known as the processor / DSP chip.. but can be done with software too)
the processor says.. 'okay this sound is coming from the rear right speaker, that means we apply ____ sound effect to the audio'
this is done for each individual channel.. and in the case of the 7.1 headset, there are 7 different speakers + the subwoofer.

some of the processors sound more realistic than others.. and this has nothing to do with the speaker quality themselves.
the speakers might sound fantastic as stereo headphones.. but if the effects are generic, the affects will be generic.
