Is it possible to create a restore image for Windows XP home edition SP2
without 3rd party software?

Hi,

No, you will need Symantec Ghost, Acronis True Image, Drive Snapshot etc..

Thanks. You have just confirmed my thought. The older version of Windows
let you create restore floppy disks? Why XP not? Is this a regression?
Just a thought.

In XP Home the MS backup util is not installed by default. You'd have to
install it using add/remove programs and have the install CD.

There's no way you're going to get an image of a hard drive on a floppy
disk. Chances are, unless you've got a very lean install, you're not going
to get an image of a hard drive onto a reasonable numbers of CDs, either.
Are you sure you mean you want an image? Are you perhaps just thinking of
boot disks?

There is a difference between creating an Image and creating a restore
floppy.
Since the XP CD is bootable it is its own "restore" CD..........a floppy can
be created but it would not help without the CD drivers on it to access the
XP CD.
An Image on the other hand is like taking a snapshot of your HD or Partition
and as such requires 3rd party software...this capability was never included
in any version of MS operating systems.3rd party software that does this
usually also include the ability to "clone" a HD or partition. This clone
would basically be a bootable copy of your HD.In the event that your HD
fails or something on the HD makes it impossible to boot you would replace
that HD with the cloned drive and be up and running again. This clone would
include everything on the old drive...the OS,all programs that you installed
as well as all of your personal files.Of course it would need to be updates
regularly.
Acronis True Image is one of the better ones and at a reasonable cost
considering the altenatives.

I think she meant the native Windows Backup program, which is not
installed in XP Home by default.

Restore floppy disks were NOT an image file. Two entirely different animals.

An image file does not repair anything. All it does is let you go back in
time to "any" image, created on "any" date that you have stored for
retrieval. You then overwrite your present operating system partition with
the previous version - but it does NOT repair the present condition. It
makes it as though the condition never occurred.

You need third party software to do this.
