How to get a PC to charge an ipod

Hello,
my son just purchased an iPod. he is using the cord that came with it, but my PC says that the device is not recognized so he cannot charge it. he went to a friend's house and it charged fine on their mac. What do we need to check for on my PC?

you need to list the name and model number of the computer
go to the manufacturer's website
look for the latest drivers, you will need to install the latest drivers to allow the unit to do this. Sometimes the manufacturer provides free application for this function, besides drivers.
Some computers, I would think older ones do not have this function.
