Tech Firepower

Firepower won't boot. Haven't worked on it for 2 months (it IS a
hobby, not a JOB, afterall). All balls in place. Run diagnostics and
when in switch test, operating switches multiple times (doesn't seem to
be any rhyme or reason) will cause the switch test to stop, and all
displays to go blank. Also, notice that when touching metal side rail
edge, a slight/annoying little shock. Any ideas welcome and
appreciated.

OK, shock issue: Check your grounds. If you don't have continuity
between the third (ground) pin on your power cord and the rail (and
other ground points), fix it, there's a wire off somewhere or the
ground pin is cut off (very common).

Make sure you have the right driver board for firepower - check under
marvin3m.com/fix under WMS 3-7 section about the resistors in the
switch matrix section. Also, have you replaced the 40 pin interboard
connector?

Depending on HOW you're operating the switches might be a clue as to
what's happening too - are you pressing them more times than it's
possible to actually physically hit them even with 3 ball multiball?
You could be overloading what the software can handle, especially if
the software pushes things onto the microprocessor stack.

What happens in game situations?

Actually either version of the driver board will work in Firepower- old or
new. The "new" version just had some resistors on the switch lines replaced
with zero-ohm jumpers so the later model games (1980 BK and up) drop target
switches could be read/caught properly. Doesn't have any bearing on earlier
games/targets, so either board will work in Firepower.

Driver board is correct. Am operating switches "normally" - not
hammering them. Also, just noticed that I can not get into game
adjustments ("test 4") so am not able to adjust for free play, number
of balls, scoring, etc. No, I have not replaced the 40 pin connector.
Until the machine went "dead" (goes into attract mode but will not
start a game) about 2-3 months ago, all scoring and other functions
(including lamp/display/switch tests) worked fine. Is the "shock"
issue related to any of this? Thanks for your reply. Any other ideas
welcome.

Shock problem is not related to switches. See above response about
power cord ground.

You say the game won't boot, but you are able to get into switch test.
This cannot be. Exactly what is the game not doing and when?

Thanks for response. Game will not "activate" and play . . .I call
that booting up (may be that I am using the wrong term). Goes into
attract mode, will let me go through display test, lamp test, switch
test but I can not go into the "section" to change game
features/settings. Machine will display a "4" in the ball in credit
display but feature (ball in play display) stays on "OO". All 3 balls
are in trough but machine won't play/start. When in attract mode, the
credits show 20.

If so you need to Click on the link in the challenge and do what it says.
This is usually a one time deal.

the "4" sounds like bad batteries or battery holder coroded.

If you have not try new AA batteries on the mpu. Then with coin door open
turn off and on a few times about 2 seconds apart.
Or if you can restore factory settings (see page 7 of the small booklet.
Either should reset the lost CMOS data to factory settings.

Then set to freeplay (function 18 = 00 see page 4.)

Dallas...

Still a nogo? try and get into switch test and check ALL switches by hand
inclucing the credit button and if there is a problem
post back what it is and someone will likely steer you proper. Note you may
wish to remove balls prior to entering switch test.

Dallas...
